"A very pleasant smallish hotel, situated in the centre of a residential area. It has recently changed hands, and appears to be going through some changes, none of which interfered with our stay. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and made the stay even more pleasant. Food was good, and good value for money, although the menu is quite limited."

Why We Love This Hotel

  • Durker Roods Hotel is three miles from the Peak District National Park, making it a great base for walkers
  • The hotel was the former home of Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin and after whom the DB series of cars were named
  • The manor dates back to 1870 -- expect traditional British décor, including original fireplaces and chandeliers

Overview

Durker Roods Hotel is in the picturesque village of Meltham in West Yorkshire, on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park.

The manor house dates back to 1870 and was once the private residence of Huddersfield entrepreneur Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin from 1946-1972, and after whom the famous DB series of cars is named. The building has maintained many of its original features, with traditional décor -- including fireplaces and chandeliers -- complemented by contemporary comforts such as free Wi-Fi. There’s also a modern restaurant serving traditional British cuisine for lunch and dinner.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Holmfirth, which has a selection of shops and tea rooms. Tours and wine-tasting sessions are available at the award-winning Holmfirth Vineyard. Shibden Hall & Park, EUREKA! National Children's Museum, Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are all around 20 minutes' drive away.

For a day trip, the Brontë Parsonage Museum in pretty Haworth, Royal Armouries Leeds, Harewood House, the Emmerdale Studio Experience, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and York Racecourse are all less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The countryside surrounding the hotel has featured in numerous British TV series and films, including "Happy Valley", "Emmerdale" and "Last of the Summer Wine", much of which was filmed in Holmfirth. There's now a museum and open-top bus tour to showcase the famous locations from the TV series.

The area is prime hiking territory, with some of the Peak District’s most famous walks within a 10-minute drive. After a day of exploring, you can enjoy the views across the rolling hills from the hotel bar, lounge or outdoor beer garden.

The package included £20 credit per person towards evening meal on the first night and afternoon tea on the second day. We asked for superior rooms and were allocated the wedding suite room which was very spacious.

Would have liked an itemised bill for any extras. Unsure of the price for soft drinks as only wine on the list
