Why We Love This Hotel

  • This Grade II-listed Art Deco hotel is right on the seafront promenade, with views of Morecambe Bay and, on a clear day, the fells of the South Lakes
  • The AA-Rosette-awarded Sun Terrace Resturant boasts magnificent sea views through floor-to-ceiling windows and offers modern Lancashire cuisine
  • Former guests include music legends Shirley Bassey and the Rolling Stones, and the actor George Formby
  • The city of Lancaster with its medieval castle and Georgian architecture is 20 minutes away by car, while the South lakes are a 40-minute drive away

"went to a function in side room. Extremely hot day and no air conditioning made for an uncomfortable experience. Luckilly we could sit outside with a slightly cool breeze. We did ask for airconditioning to be switched but I don't think it was."

This landmark hotel with views over Morecambe Bay first opened in the 1930s, and after careful restoration it now welcomes guests looking for a stylish seaside stay -- the illustrious list of former residents includes Shirley Bassey, the Rolling Stones and George Formby. Designed by British architect Oliver Hill, it is built in the Streamlined Moderne style of Art Deco, with a curved white facade and stylish central tower and rotunda, and carvings by Eric Gill.

The beach is on the doorstep, and you can take an easy stroll to the town centre's shops and bars along the promenade. The Platform live entertainment venue is just behind the hotel, while Happy Mount Park with its scenic pathways, Japanese garden, mini golf and bowling green is five minutes' drive away.

Nearby Lancaster offers a pleasant day out and can be reached in around 20 minutes by car or train. Its medieval castle is described by English Heritage as the "Northwest's most important historic and archaeological monument". The city is known for its attractive Georgian architecture. The Butterfly House and the Ashton Memorial in the 54-acre Williamson Park are worth a visit. The South Lakes, including the pretty village of Lakeside and bustling Bowness-on-Windermere, is around 40 minutes' drive away.

The Sun Terrace is an AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant boasting views over the bay through its floor-to-ceiling windows. You can enjoy a variety of cocktails and drinks in the Ravilious Rotunda Bar. Guests can use The Sandpiper Club health and spa facilities at Lancaster House, the hotel's sister property, which is 25 minutes' drive away near Lancaster.

Really enjoyed a couple of nights at the Midland which is delightfully quirky. Had wanted to stay at this hotel for some time and we weren't disappointed. Enjoyed the food, including from the Rotunda Bar. Great dining room to watch the sunsets - we were lucky to have good weather! - and the tides.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Midland; easy check in and out; lovely big sea view room with some quirky features; delicious evening meal served by attentive staff and equally delicious breakfast; friendly staff. The only thing that lets it down is Morecambe - perhaps we would have been more impressed if the sun had shone, but unfortunately Morecambe is looking very sad and shabby. Not a resort that we'll be returning to ☹️
