Higher Trapp Hotel has panoramic views of the Lancashire countryside from its elevated position within four acres of terraced gardens in the Pendle Valley.
The location is excellent for walkers. Hike the Pendle Way footpath, beginning in Barley, which is less than 15 minutes' drive away. You'll discover landscapes ranging from moorland to meadow, and visit villages and hamlets associated with the 17th-century Pendle Witch trials, along the way.
Follow the 5.5-mile Tolkien Trail, starting at Hurst Green (around 25 minutes' walk from the hotel). This circular route through the Ribble Valley passes through landscapes that inspired the author while writing The Lord of the Rings.
Gawthorpe Hall, an Elizabethan country house and National Trust property, is around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. Stroll through the gardens, which have views over the River Calder and visit the Gawthorpe Textile Collection.
The hotel has a conservatory and a terrace where you can enjoy country vistas over a drink at the end of a day's sightseeing. Fitzy's Bar & Restaurant also has scenic views from its floor-to-ceiling windows.
Standard rooms are furnished in traditional style and have a double or twin beds. All rooms have flatscreen TVs and free high-speed Wi-Fi.

Evening meal very good staff very friendly. The rooms are clean not the most modern but was good enough for our one night stay. Room was a little bit warm even with the radiator off but still managed a good night's sleep.

We managed to get a superior room upgrade on arrival at a good extra price. Or room was nice and clean and had a lovely en suite and comfy four poster bed. All the staff were were excellent and couldn't do enough for us. The food was very good and there was a good choice from the menu. We had excellent sunny weather which allowed us to sit out on the terrace which was ideal as there are limited interesting places to visit in the area. All in all we enjoyed our couple of days away.

The hotel was a bit tired in some areas. The gardens however were lovely. and the staff were excellent and very friendly. Excellent hotel location but with limited places in the locality to visit in our opinion.

Not possible for her to access the shower in the bath.

Good value for money. Friendly staff and great fresh-cooked breakfast, so much better than lukewarm buffet breakfasts at many hotels these days. Rooms in annex a bit tired decor-wise but clean and comfy beds and a good shower. Will definitely stay again

Lovely hotel nicely tucked away with stunning views. Clean and comfy rooms with tea/coffee and biscuits and hot chocolate supplied in your room. Staff are, without exception, lovely and friendly - like proper northerners! The food is exceptionally good and quickly served, good and hot. Drinks are at a reasonable price, in fact, there’s nothing not to like. We will be visiting again soon.

Hotel ideally situated for exploring the Pendle/Ribble area. The staff were very friendly, and the breakfast and evening meal good.
Other Comments
The only negative would be that we were in a separate building to the hotel, so not ideal having to walk outside for meals, we did ask to be moved into the main hotel but unfortunately there were no twin rooms available. The bedroom and entrance area looked a little tired, but was still good value. We would definitely stay again, but would ask for a room in the main hotel building next time.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Higher Trapp Hotel. All the staff were very helpful and friendly and pleased to serve. There was a very convivial atmosphere with fresh flowers in the public rooms which was very nice to see. The food was very good and served promptly. The downside was that the furnishings and carpets in the public rooms were very tired. The stair carpet was threadbare in places. Our room, although it had everything I would expect of a bedroom, was very small and in need of a makeover. The shower was over the bath which is not so easy to negotiate when you are getting old! However, there were grab rails. We would stay here again but are unlikely to return as there are so many other places to see.
Other Comments
The hotel was quite busy which, again, was nice to see as it added to the atmosphere. Apparently, they are busy with weddings (there was a wedding on the day we left) but at no time did we feel neglected because of a larger event taking place. All the staff were chatty and friendly and made us feel really welcome. Our break was very good value for money.

Overall we enjoyed our 2 night stay. On arrival we were greeted by a helpful and friendly receptionist who directed us to our room. On entering the room we immediately noticed the bottle of wine and 2 glasses that had been offered as part of 'the deal'. The room was large in comparison to other places we have stayed, but, 'very tired' looking. The carpets were very worn and furniture and curtains etc. very dated. The bathroom was quite small and not easy to manoeuvre in easily. Lovely to have a nice big bath though! Tea/coffee and biscuits were replenished each day. The large double bed was very comfortable and clean which is a must for us. The meals in the restaurant were superb and the breakfasts too. (No complaints there). Service all around was excellent. We have never been to a hotel in the UK where the staff have all been so friendly, polite and professional. We would definitely go back.
Other Comments
The only negative for us was the room was very dated. The carpets definitely need replacing as they were worn and thread bare in a few places and dark brown old fashioned curtains were a 'no'. The view from our window was of a flat roof covered in fake grass which was all very messy and wasn't pleasant to look out upon.

We had a lovely time. Food was good, staff very pleasant and helpful. 2 things not happy about. Had to sleep with window closed as very noisy from generator outside. Room was not very clean. Dont know when it was properly cleaned for months by the dust and items behind bed side tables dressing table and bed. Did report to receptionist.
