Why We Love This Hotel

  • This country hotel has an elevated position with views over the Lancashire countryside, and is surrounded by terraced gardens within its own 36-acre parkland
  • The Elizabethan country house of Gawthorpe Hall is just over 10 minutes' drive from the hotel
  • Nearby Pendle Hill and the Forest of Bowland are prime walking areas; local routes include the Trail of the Pendle Witches
  • Follow in the footsteps of JRR Tolkien, who found inspiration here for The Lord of the Rings tales -- start at Hurst Green (around 25 minutes' drive away) and walk the 5.5-mile circular trail exploring the Ribble Valley
  • The secluded ruins of Wycoller Hall is 30 minutes away by car -- it is thought to be the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre

"Lovely, comfortable hotel set in extensive grounds and pretty gardens. Good location for exploring area."

Best Western Burnley West Higher Trapp Hotel is a traditional hotel overlooking the pleasant Lancashire countryside. It is surrounded by terraced gardens within 36 acres of parkland on the slopes of Pendle Hill. It is near the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and provides a comfortable base for a walking holiday.

You can embark on a rewarding hike along the 45-mile Pendle Way footpath. The route is divided into eight sections, the closest of which is around nearby Newchurch-in-Pendle and Barley, within a 15-minute drive from the hotel. The area covers a variety of terrains, ranging from rugged millstone moorland to limestone meadows, and there are quaint villages and hamlets along the way associated with the Brontë sisters and the 17th-century trials of the Pendle Witches. The Elizabethan country house of Gawthorpe Hall is just over 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. You can take a stroll through the gardens, which have views over the River Calder, visit the Gawthorpe Textile Collection or sample some cake in the tea room.

Back in the hotel, leather sofas and ornate ceilings create a warm, friendly atmosphere. You can relax in the conservatory or sit outside and take in the views from the terrace when the sun is out. Fitzy's Bar & Restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows and offers "local classics and more adventurous dishes", says The AA.

Standard Rooms are furnished in traditional style and have a double bed with crisp cotton sheets. All rooms come with large flatscreen TVs and free high-speed Wi-Fi.

Even though there was a wedding on at the hotel and I did receive a phone call to advise of this it did not have any impact on our stay.

My first visit was for a funeral wake so was good to stay there under different circumstances. Apart from a couple of minor things a very enjoyable experience. Excellent food . Would recommend.

Although pet friendly, it isn’t really. We had an issue during our stay that the hotel are dealing with, so would not be fair to air in on here . The bar and restaurant are all in one and pets are not allowed in there. There is another longe with a tv and the staff will bring your drinks to you, however there was an evening wedding reception taking over this room so we were not allowed in. Need I say more

Great friendly welcome on arrival. Room upgrade was okay ( we got the bridal suite-it was our 36th wedding anniversary). However, the furniture had been recently treated and smelt of cat pee. Windows opened and large doses or deodorant and after shave saved the day.Restaurant was also very welcoming and the service was okay. Not great as the first two tables we sat at we were asked if we would move as that had been reserved. They did have a great view of the gardens. Although it would have helped us if they actually had a reserved sign on them..... The meal value was great. However, my wife had sea bass. One small fillet and three prawns & a very small garnish. £15.50. Ouch. My Rag pudding though was a real rib filler. Slept well and ate a full English breakfast. Only real comment about breakfast was poor Mollie was run of her feet taking orders, serving meals and re stocking the breakfast selection as well as clearing tables. Maybe she needs more assistance in the future ?

great value for money with this deal. The alcohol prices were quite high and we overheard other people complaing to each other and one table said to each other they would not return. We would only go back on a deal.

Having visited this hotel over the last 30 years, it feels time that it has a face lift. There is a lot of competition in the area, and we feel this hotel will neec to up its game regarding the furnishings in the public areas and the bedrooms too.
