In its 2019 list of recommended hotels, Forbes lauded the Saint Paul as the "grande dame" of Twin City hostelries. Tack on its ranking among U.S. News & World Report's and Frommer's top Minneapolis-Saint Paul hotels, and you start to get a sense of the prestige surrounding the property since its opening in 1910.
Surface-level antiquity may give pause to some -- mahogany headboards and dressers are a mainstay of room decor. However, contemporary updates like hypoallergenic pillows, iHome docking stations and Keurig coffee machines (standard in all rooms) make the Saint Paul comfortable for modern travelers.
The hotel's real draw is in its reverence for old-world traditions, for instance the daily five-course afternoon tea -- we recommend reserving in advance, as it often sells out. A full-time horticulturist also works on the property to maintain the English-style gardens year-round (yes, even during the Minnesota winters). Then there's the on-site Saint Paul Grill, which specializes in premium scotches and prime cuts of meat served on white tablecloths in its wood-paneled dining room.
