A striking 19th-century castle topped with turrets provides the setting for Chateau de L'Ile hotel, which combines refined accommodation with easy access to exploring France's Alsace region.
Surrounded by wooded parkland on the banks of the river Ile, the hotel is a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ostwald and a 20-minute drive from Strasbourg, known for its winding medieval streets, canals, and "mesmeric" (Lonely Planet) Gothic cathedral. Obernai, a Renaissance market town, is 25 minutes drive away, whilst the picturesque villages of Colmar and Riquewihr are within an hour's drive of the hotel.
Stained glass windows and plush furnishings give the Chateau de L'Ile’s interiors a grand feel. There's an elegant bar for cocktails and a fine-dining restaurant with a riverside terrace, which serves French cuisine, as well as traditional Alsace-style brasserie offering regional dishes. Guests can soak up the sun on the patio and relax in the spa, which includes an indoor pool, a sauna and a hot tub.
Overlooking the river or the village, the lavish guestrooms feature antique-style furniture and richly patterned fabrics, and come with free Wi-Fi, TVs, mini bars, and marble bathrooms. Higher tariff rooms add wooden floors and balconies, whilst suites, some on two levels, sleep up to five people and have separate living space.
