Set on a tree-lined road, The Ravensworth occupies "an elegant, Lakeland stone building" (Frommer's), dating from the 1850s. It is five minutes' drive, or a 15-minute walk, from the shores of Windermere, "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet).

The World of Beatrix Potter, with its 3D depictions of the author's work, is a 5-minute drive away, while you can walk to the summit of Orrest Head in around 30 minutes for views along the lake. Blackwell, a landmark Arts and Crafts house, is about 10 minutes' drive away, and Ullswater, with its lake cruises, takes 30 minutes to reach by car.

The Ravensworth has bright, homely interiors, which include a guest lounge with leather sofas and a library stocked with local walking guides. Guests can start the day with a buffet breakfast in the conservatory (served from 8:15-9:30am), which is lined with exposed stone, and relax with a drink on the terrace after a day of hiking or sightseeing.

The 11 "charming" (Frommer's) bedrooms feature warm décor in neutral tones with wood furnishings and patterned fabrics. All come with free Wi-Fi, TVs, DVD players and iPod docks, as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Had a four night stay and loved it. Good location only a couple of hundred yards from town centre. We had the standard double room which was okay for us. Owners lovely and friendly as was the young lady helping with breakfasts. Good choice at breakfast for most people.

We had a very nice stay at The Ravensworth. Comfy bed, nice breakfast and we'll located. What more could you ask for? It would help to have a street number as it was a bit difficult to find while driving. The lettering on the sign was light, so difficult to spot, especially for overseas visitors who were unfamiliar with the area.

Welcomed by the owner and shown to our room. Everything was explained to us. Even given ideas for local walks. Great staff and a good breakfast, with some unusual dishes on the menu.
