Why We Love This Hotel

  • This "chic, contemporary" (The Daily Telegraph) hotel is housed in a 13th-century inn where Charles Dickens once stayed
  • Denbies Wine Estate and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are a 5-minute drive away
  • The "splendid" (The Times Cool Hotel Guide) restaurant "punches well above its weight" (The Daily Telegraph)
  • You can sip Dickens-themed cocktails in the bar

Overview

The White Horse Hotel offers a "hip, historic" stay "slap bang in the centre of Dorking's main shopping street with its cosy cafés and independent outlets" (The Daily Telegraph).

Said to be where Charles Dickens wrote The Pickwick Papers, The White Horse Hotel occupies a former 18th-century coaching inn with a whitewashed façade, and is a 5-minute drive from guided tours at Denbies Wine Estate and the edge of Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The National Trust's Polesden Lacey, a "gorgeous, creamy-yellow Regency mansion" with "impressive collections of furniture, paintings and porcelain" (Fodor’s) is 15 minutes' drive away, while Epsom Downs Racecourse is around a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

The White Horse Hotel features "bang on trend" (The Daily Telegraph) interiors, where "soothing contemporary tones blend seamlessly with sturdy Grade II-listed oak beams, vintage sumptuous sofas, throne chairs and retro artefacts and stylish ceramic table lamps".

Dickens memorabilia runs throughout the hotel, including "prints and references to the writer" (The Times Cool Hotel Guide), as well as a Dickens-themed cocktail list in the "busy, bijou" bar.

Guests can relax by the fire in the "characterful" (The Daily Telegraph) lounge, pick up local produce in the on-site deli, and dine on an "outstanding breakfast", "smashing surprises" and "reasonably priced classics" in the eclectic, white-painted restaurant.

The hotel's guestrooms include duck-down and feather duvets (The Daily Telegraph), as well as free Wi-Fi, TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Higher-tariff rooms add sitting areas, while plush suites come with separate lounges and coffee machines.

First class, not to be missed, best breakfast ever, great coffee and hot brewed tea served at the table. Imaginative choice of breakfast offerings.

Lovely room and comfortable bed
Other Comments
Really nice hotel with lovely little touches, but they really need to sort out their staff service. Senior staff were good but generally service was slow, staff were disinterested (at best) and just not focused on the customer. Also music in the public areas was just too loud and obtrusive. If they could sort that out it would be Great hotel.
