Surrounded by the "beautiful" (The AA) Dyfi Valley countryside on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, The Brigands Inn offers rustic-style accommodation and seasonal dining in a historic setting.

This "splendid" (The AA) property, with a whitewashed half-timbered façade, occupies a former coaching inn dating from the 15th century, and is within easy reach of walking trails and wildlife watching opportunities.

It's a 20-minute drive from King Arthur's Labyrinth, an underground boat ride and walking tour through caves and tunnels, and within 30 minutes' drive of Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway and Barmouth -- a "full-fledged seaside resort" with "a 2-mile-long-promenade and wide expanses of golden beach" (Fodor's). The "sumptuous" Powis Castle and its "exquisite terraced gardens" (Rough Guides) take around 45 minutes to reach by car.

Beams, open fireplaces and "stylish" (The AA) décor characterise The Brigands Inn's cosy interiors. The restaurant serves seasonal dishes made using local produce. Dogs are welcome (supplements apply), with specially brewed canine beer also available.

The nine rooms are individually decorated and feature solid oak furnishings, exposed wood beams and Egyptian cotton bedding. Most rooms have a shower over the bath. Some rooms have 4-poster beds and countryside views. Wi-Fi is free.

Excellent place to stay. We had a short stop for 2 nights over a weekend. Very warm welcoming, rooms are absolutely lovely (fantastic oak bed) and quality breakfasts. Lovely and quiet overnight even though close to a road, very warm room and this was just what was needed to combat the cold outside. I would be happy to return again for a visit or recommend to anyone. Book yourself a table to have some food in the evenings, its well worth it.
