The Maldron Hotel Newcastle is a new 4-star property in Newcastle city centre set to open its doors this December.

The hotel's central location is hard to beat, with the city's main cultural and entertainment spots all within walking distance. Rough Guides named Newcastle the best place to travel in 2018, saying that visitors should "expect to be bowled over by Geordie geniality and the city's nightlife, which is notoriously lively".

Shopaholics should head to the intu Eldon Square shopping centre, hit the high-street shops on Northumberland Street, or explore the independent stores of Grainger Town (all within a 10-minute walk of the hotel). Nearby Gateshead is home to the largest shopping centre in Europe -- the intu Metrocentre -- where you'll find a huge selection of department stores as well as leisure and dining spots. It's less than 15 minutes' drive away, or there is a direct bus that goes from near the hotel.

Many of the Tyneside's art galleries and museums, including the BALTIC and Great North Museum, are less than 20 minutes' walk away. Newcastle Castle -- the medieval fortification that gave the city its name -- is less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel.

The grain & grill restaurant is open for lunch, dinner and drinks, with a selection of gourmet sandwiches and afternoon tea available during the day, and a varied menu of fresh, local produce in the evening. We have negotiated afternoon tea for two, including a cocktail on arrival, tea or coffee and a selection of sandwiches, cakes and fruit scones with clotted cream and preserves, for £20.

Deluxe Rooms have a double or twin bed, while Executive Rooms have a king-size bed. Wi-Fi is free.

Fantastic location especially for anyone arriving by train. Great food. Lovely rooms. Nice bar area and lobby. The one thing that struck me most was how helpful, friendly and happy the staff all were. That is the one thing that made this hotel stand out from others I have stopped at in Newcastle. We are hoping to book in again some time soon.

We did have cause to complain in the hotel restaurant in respect of the Valentine offer. The menu offered to us was NOT from the a la carte menu as advertised in the Travel Zoo offer. The menu offered was extremely limited and offered a poor choice. We opted instead to choose from the a la carte menu and we were informed that we had an allowance of £26 per person towards the cost of our food choices. In the event each of us opted to select only a main course and an item from the “side extras”. One of our party - from a party of four - also had a dessert. Each individual selected items from the menu which totalled well less than our £26 per person allowance, including the cost of the “extras”. We were, therefore surprised and annoyed to discover that the Hotel had charged us separately for the “extras” which came to around £12 in total. We took this up with the Duty Manager who, after quite a lengthy discussion, waved the extras charge. We feel Travel Zoo would have been better to state that each person is given a £26 allowance towards meals from the a la carte menu, but that this does not include “side extras”. Some people with larger appetites and eating three courses would easily manage to spend more than £26 per person. This incident, whilst by no means ruining our evening, did create a “bad taste” at the time.
