"Wrapped in woodland", Eshott Hall offers "elegant" (The Daily Telegraph) accommodation within easy reach of Northumberland's main attractions.
This boutique hotel occupies a historic creeper-clad Georgian mansion, set amid lush grounds, which feature a walled garden and wildlife such as pheasants, deer and red squirrels.
The Northumberland Coastal Path is about a 15-minute drive away, Alnwick, with its "elegant maze of narrow cobbled streets around its colossal medieval castle" (Lonely Planet) is 20 minutes' drive away, and "splendid" (Fodor’s) Bamburgh Castle takes 40 minutes to reach by car. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, with its castle, priory and harbour, is approximately an hour's drive from the hotel.
Eshott Hall's grand façade opens to public rooms, which are "elegant yet not overly large and furnished with a mix of antiques and reproduction furniture" (The Daily Telegraph). A stained-glass window by William Morris decorates the hallway, and there's a stucco-lined lobby lounge with richly upholstered sofas, and a stately library-style bar with a fireplace.
The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant has "moulded plasterwork on the walls, a soothing gold colour scheme and a fire in cooler weather" (The AA) and serves a menu "with a Northumbrian slant given to classic dishes" (The Daily Telegraph). Other amenities include a tennis court, croquet facilities and clay pigeon shooting on request.
Spread between the main house and the nearby Grange, the bedrooms offer a mix of antique and contemporary décor with furnishings such as "elaborate headboards, sleigh beds, French armoires, Chinese lacquer cabinets and mirror-topped tables" (The Daily Telegraph). All rooms overlook the grounds and come with free Wi-Fi, TVs, iPod docks, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Self-catering cottages sleeping up to six people are also available.
