Overview

The hotel is 15 minutes' walk from the village of Marston, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. You can walk the Beanholme or Witham trails, which start at the village hall and vary between 2-5 miles.

The hotel is less than 10 minutes' drive from the Grantham Canal, a Site of Special Scientific Interest that's home to a wide variety of wildlife. The reed beds are home to rare bird species including the sedge warbler, reed warbler and reed bunting, and the towpath has been rebuilt as a walking and cycling route.

Easton Walled Gardens, Lincolnshire's own lost garden that's home to snowdrops, sweet peas, roses and meadows, is 15 minutes' drive away.

Newark-on-Trent is around 20 minutes' drive away. Here you can explore the Georgian market square or Newark Castle and Gardens, home to dungeons, Victorian gardens and an exhibition about King John.

Sconce and Devon Park, with woodland walks, a nature reserve and a 17th-century Civil War earthwork fortification, and Newark Air Museum are both less than 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's restaurant showcases original period features and has wrought ironwork and beams. Menus change daily and include seasonal ingredients. There is a stylish and contemporary bar that serves local beers and traditional hearty dishes.

Other facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a hot tub and a steam room. There is also a gym and a solarium, and beauty treatments are available (supplements apply; pre-book to avoid disappointment).

The spa was lovely; On the whole the bar and kitchen/ dining room staff were all very helpful however let down by quality of the room, and front of house staff.
Other Comments
The room we booked was supposed to be a superior room, this was not the case. It was in the eaves of the building thus had limited head room. The tea/coffee facility was in a corner under the eaves we had to bend quite low to make a hot drink. The TV was much too small for the room size. The mattress had a permanent dip in the spring and needs replacing quite urgently. sleep on that side of the bed very poor and getting out from that side of the bed in the morning was very difficult. In the dining room we observed one member of the restuarant staff clean down the tables in the morning with a tea towel, after clearing the used plates, then promptly put out the clean cutlery not by the handle of the cutlery but by the end with which people would be using to eat their food. as she had not washed her hands their would be potential for cross contamination due to poor hand washing hygiene. We also wanted to visit some local tourist attractions again very unhelpful at the reception desk.
