Why We Love This Hotel

  • The Olde Barn Hotel is an ideal base from which to explore the market towns and villages of the rolling Lincolnshire countryside
  • Grade-I listed Belvoir Castle is less than 20 minutes away by car, while the imposing Grimsthorpe Castle Park & Gardens is a 35-minute drive (opening times may vary by season)
  • After a day out walking in the area, you can relax in the health club, which has an indoor pool, a sauna and a gym

"First and foremost, great value for money. Superior room was very good. Breakfast very good. The ONLY criticism, if it could be called a criticism, is that the 3 course evening meal, whilst tasty, lacked the extra flourishes you get used to. For example the dessert, in my case lemon tart, is just lightly dusted with cocoa powder. No cream or any other trimmings."

Overview

The Olde Barn Hotel is 15 minutes' walk from the village of Marston, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. You can walk the Beanholme or Witham trails, which start at the village hall and vary between 2-5 miles in length.

The hotel is less than 10 minutes' drive from the Grantham Canal, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The reed beds are home to rare bird species including the sedge warbler, reed warbler and reed bunting, and the towpath has been rebuilt as a walking and cycling route.

Easton Walled Gardens, Lincolnshire's own lost garden that's home to snowdrops, sweet peas, roses and meadows, is 15 minutes' drive away.

Newark-on-Trent is around 20 minutes' drive away. Here you can explore the Georgian market square or Newark Castle and Gardens, home to dungeons, Victorian gardens and an exhibition about King John.

Sconce and Devon Park, with woodland walks, a nature reserve and a 17th-century Civil War earthwork fortification, and Newark Air Museum are both less than 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's restaurant showcases original period features and has wrought ironwork and beams. Menus change daily and include seasonal ingredients. There is a stylish and contemporary bar that serves local beers and traditional hearty dishes.

Other facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a hot tub and a steam room. There is also a gym and a solarium, and beauty treatments are available (supplements apply; pre-booking advised).

Rooms are in modern wings that adjoin, and have indoor access to, the original barn.

Staff made us welcome but wine waiter forgot our order. Evening meal was adequate - a bit hit and miss on quality. Excellent English breakfast. comfortable bedrom with super shower. Some public rooms upholstery/carpets rather tired. A large fairly modern hotel - 130 bedrooms on only 2 floors with long corridors which give it a bit of an impersonal feel.

We booked just for a night away not too far from home. Friendly and helpful staff made it a very pleasant stay. Both the evening meals and breakfast were extremely good.
