Overview

The Crown Hotel is a "regal" (The Daily Telegraph) property in the spa town of Harrogate that boasts "traditional old-world charm" and an "excellent location".

It's less than 10 minutes' walk from the fashionable shops, bars and restaurants in the town centre, where you'll also find the renowned Bettys tea room, "famed for its elegant afternoon teas, delectable cakes and biscuits, tasty lunches and excellent service" (The Yorkshire Post).

The Grade II-listed Valley Gardens -- a 17-acre park with seasonal flower displays, a café, a children's playground, a small boating lake, tennis courts and a crazy golf course -- is a 5-minute stroll from the hotel. Opposite the main entrance, you'll also find the impressive Victorian Royal Pump Room, now a museum where you can learn about the history of Harrogate water.

York and Leeds are both around 45 minutes' drive from the hotel, while the historic market towns of Wetherby and Knaresborough are less than 25 minutes' drive away. Harrogate is also a gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with popular sites such as Bolton Abbey, Swinsty Reservoir and Skipton Castle all around 30 minutes' drive away. The National Trust site of Brimham Rocks -- a large collection of natural rock formations in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty -- is also around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Breakfast is served in the grand ballroom -- the oldest in Harrogate -- where you can admire the original stained-glass windows and oak-panelled walls. There is also a bar for snacks and drinks throughout the day, and a restaurant that serves "hearty, well-presented European food" (The Daily Telegraph) and afternoon tea.

Executive Rooms are more spacious than Standard Rooms and feature a king-size bed. Wi-Fi is free.

The location was excellent which makes the situation very unfortunate. The hotel needs a total overhaul.
Other Comments
The room was disappointing. When the toilet was refilling with water the pipes made a very loud moaning noise. Three lights in the work did not work. The window, which faced to the front of the hotel, was very large and the curtain would not close properly which meant that sunlight came into the room very early. The food was also under par. The breakfast was all self service, buffet style, many items in the buffet were over cooked. The dinner was served in the hotel bar, which lacked any sense of occasion; the food itself was of a low standard. The staff were either friendly nor helpful. In addition the car parking was very poor. My car suffered minor damage in the hotel forecourt and the staff were uninterested. We heard other people making complaints. This hotel was not of the normal standard recommended by Travelzoo.

I have stayed in numerous hotels, but this is the first time I have had to pay for parking, which was quite expensive at £12 per night, and not made clear at the point of booking.

Asking for a quiet room and then being given one right on the road by a pub garden. We got so little sleep we were exhausted all weekend and it ruined our trip.
