Overview

Tucked away on a private peninsula off the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, the Tides Inn is a 4-star property with amazing water views. The property welcomes everyone, including pets, and offers an extensive activities list for all ages.

Rooms and suites are decorated in a British-colonial style with mahogany tones, while bathrooms feature marble. In-room amenities include a coffeemaker, Wi-Fi, bathrobes and a signature ginger ale with turn-down service each evening. There are five restaurants on site, each with a unique setting: Chesapeake Restaurant, Chesapeake Terrace, Overlook Dining, Commodore's and Golden Eagle Grill. Because the Tides Inn is located along the Virginia Wine Trail, each restaurant offers an expansive list to pick from.

This waterfront property is not shy when it comes to on-site activities. Guests can choose from golfing, renting bikes, water sports or even a relaxing day at the full-service spa. Unique classes are also offered like a mixology class or oyster roasting. Kids 4-12 have an array of supervised activities to choose from such as tennis camp or golf camp. Join other guests around a campfire every evening at either the terrace or the beach (weather permitting) for s'mores and stargazing. Wi-Fi, valet parking and use of sports equipment is covered with the daily resort fee.

Explore one of many wineries along the Virginia Wine Trail nearby. The Tides Inn is also near the Virginia Oyster Trail, home to the largest producer of farm-raised oysters in the country.

Service was great and so many activities included with the room —kayaking, paddle-boarding, bicycles, etc. —we had a ball.

It was a great place to relax and unwind. Sitting at the pool facing the waterfront and watching boats, birds, and people enjoying water activities was great.

The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and in good shape and quite comfortable. Eating there was a bit expensive in our opinion, but the food was good. There really isn't a choice as there were very few places to eat within 10 miles....most open only for breakfast and lunch. We did manage to get out for dinner about 6 miles away one night for burgers at NN Burger.

You have negative staff issues. Thursday morning before 9 am staff were operating gas power equipment outside our room waking us up. Wait staff in dining room lacked menu knowledge and was not happy to be there. Bell staff lacked knowledge of area restaurants but were always very friendly and helpful, as was Arturo who did his best to make up for staff deficiencies and was a bright light. Check in staff just went through the motions with no welcoming attitude but were efficient. Room was great. Facility was great. Staff issues can be easily fixed with training.

The location was key and all the amenities onsite made it really enjoyable. Traveling with kids we really enjoyed just how easy the overall experience was. The location really is gorgeous and incredibly relaxing.
Other Comments
Property feels a bit dated and front desk and restaurant staff were generally pretty ambivalent. The porters, room service and cleaning staff were incredible however. Great base of operations for swimming, kayaking and crabbing off the dock and from there we were about to have day excursions to enjoy Kilmarnock and White Stone.

The Tides Inn grounds are exceptionally well maintained and scenic masterpieces. The Inn staff were very welcoming and helpful. The superbly prepared food, refreshments and excellent amenities made for a very enjoyable visit.
Other Comments
The rooms were very clean and well maintained, but there may be personal safety issues with the tub/shower positioning arrangements in The Lancaster house. Entry and egress of the tub/shower can easily result in a fall due to awkward placement. Suggest consideration be given to removing the tubs and reconfigure to just a shower arrangement. This could help preclude needless and costly injuries. Also, suggest adding self service ice machines in each building.

It’s a nice, non-expensive escape from DC without breaking the bank. Family friendly, lots of activities, or you can relax by the pool, overlooking the water.
