Hotel la Plaça de Madremanya offers “a romantic getaway” amid “gorgeous countryside” (The Daily Telegraph). Surrounded by Catalonia’s Gavarres hills, this boutique hotel occupies a former stone-built farmhouse clad with lilac and bougainvillea, and is set on the edge of a medieval village, about a 5-minute drive from Monells, known for its quaint winding streets. Púbol, home to a “Gothic-Renaissance” castle with “surrealist touches” (Lonely Planet), the former home of Salvador Dali’s wife Gala, is a 10-minute drive away, whilst both Girona with its “brooding hilltop castle, soaring cathedral and dreamy riverside setting” (Fodor’s) and Costa Brava’s scenic beaches take around 30 minutes’ to reach by car. The cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is 90 minutes drive from the hotel.
“Good taste” characterises Hotel la Plaça de Madremanya’s interiors, which feature a “contemporary but unpretentious country mix of original rough-hewn stone walls and arched ceilings, terracotta flooring strewn with kilims and stylish furnishings” (The Daily Telegraph). There’s a library room, as well as a restaurant with vaulted ceilings serving “upscale Catalan” (The Daily Telegraph) fare, and the hotel’s “peaceful” (The Daily Telegraph) tree-lined garden includes an outdoor pool.
The hotel’s individually decorated country-style rooms and suites are “spacious, light and airy” (The Daily Telegraph) and finished in neutral tones. All rooms include ceiling fans, free Wi-Fi and sitting areas, plus modern bathrooms. Higher tariff rooms add terraces with “breathtaking countryside views” (The Daily Telegraph), whilst 1- and 2-bedroom suites feature distinct touches such as glass-panelled bathrooms, exposed beams and fireplaces. Some come with kitchenettes and air-conditioning.
