Why We Love This Hotel

  • This coaching inn dates back to the 15th century is in a great spot next to the historic market square in Helmsley in the North Yorkshire countryside
  • The property was crowned Hotel of the Year at the 2015 Yorkshire Life Food & Drink Awards
  • You can sample fine-dining fare in the 3-AA-Rosette hotel restaurant or indulge in afternoon tea
  • "The hotel is renowned for its hospitality and friendliness" -- The AA

"People have been visiting this establishment for over 200 years and it has become a landmark that dominates the market square," says The AA of the Black Swan, a 4-star hotel in the pretty North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley.

The hotel is in a "peerless location", according to The Daily Telegraph, "presiding over the market place of one of North Yorkshire's most attractive market towns". It's surrounded by quaint little boutiques and bookshops, as well as butchers, bakeries and delis. There are charming tearooms and cosy pubs, with the dramatic ruins of Helmsley Castle standing over the town.

Surrounded by the North Yorkshire countryside, the town is a great spot for ramblers. There are 1400 miles of country paths and tracks around Ryedale, so whether you're looking for a gentle stroll, a day-long walk or a hardcore hike, you're sure to find something suitable right on the doorstep.

Duncombe Park, the only stately home in the North York Moors National Park, is less than a mile away. It is home to the National Centre for Birds of Prey and offers landscaped gardens, 400 acres of parkland to explore, a nature reserve and the Helmsley Walled Gardens. The city of York, with its cathedral, cobbled streets, shops and museums, is a 50-minute drive away and Rievaulx Abbey is a 5-minute drive away.

The Black Swan dates back to the 15th century and retains much of its historic charm while offering plenty of contemporary comforts. The AA Hotel Guide 2019 praises the "stylish" bedrooms, which all have thick, snug duvets, warm, homely furnishings, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

The hotel has a quaint tearoom and an in-house patisserie that are open daily. You can also order tea -- or something a little stronger -- in the pretty walled garden in warmer months.

The AA says that "dinner in the award-winning restaurant is the highlight of any stay". The 3-AA-Rosette fine-dining Gallery Restaurant serves top-notch seasonal fare, made using ingredients that are mostly sourced within 30 miles of the hotel. The Cygnet Bar has an extensive wine list and selection of cocktails.

Toilet didn’t flush in the upgraded superior room. Quality of staff seemed Lower. It used to be so nice to be welcomed, looked after, they knew who you were and didn’t have to keep reminding them of table numbers, the personal level of service seems to have gone. A real shame.

The only thing was our shower did not have any hot water so I had a bath instead. I did mention it to the staff who came to top up our tea supplies but presumed they can't do much about plumbing....
