Overview

Opened in 1909, the Stanley Hotel is registered as a National Historic Landmark but is best known for serving as inspiration for Stephen King’s "The Shining." The property is famously haunted by its original owner and his wife; it is said that both can be seen in Victorian-era formal wear on the main staircase and that her piano plays on its own. In 2015, a replica maze from the film's chase scene was constructed on the grounds.

The Georgian-style hotel overlooks Rocky Mountain National Park and is a five-minute drive from downtown Estes Park’s restaurants and boutiques. Outdoorsy guests will find hiking, fishing, skiing and golfing within a 15-minute drive of the hotel.

Guests have a variety of accommodation options at this hotel; most include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, seating areas and the choice of one king or two queen beds. The main building features traditional rooms as well as upgraded options like rooms with Jacuzzi tubs and views of the Rocky Mountains.

Dining is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Cascades, where guests can eat fireside or dine alfresco in spring and summer. On weekends, Table hosts a rotation of celebrity chefs offering a five-course prix fixe menu. The property also features a casual coffee shop and a bar boasting the state’s largest whiskey selection. Visitors and locals alike can snag tickets to comedy shows, rock concerts and special speakers at the hotel’s Stanley Live venue.

The location was great.

The room is extremely small. Housekeeping did not replace cups or ice bag. Stayed at The Lodge, only occasionally was someone at the front desk.

It is the Stanley...

Room that we booked was not available at 8 PM. They then charged me for a room that was already paid for - still no refund.

At check in they offered us a room in the original hotel, instead of the Aspire room that was originally booked at no extra charge! A very nice surprise.

The staff at check in were very friendly and helpful. Also, the staff at the desk for the restaurant were very friendly and helpful.

Nice common areas and near Rocky Mountain National Park.
Other Comments
We have the hobby of staying at historic hotels. We had not stayed at the Stanley before and decided this would be the time. We opted to pay more for the large king room and it was a large room. Nice but is was all the more larger because there was hardly any furniture in the room (#338). There were no sitting chairs or sofa, only a desk chair and one person settee at the end of the bed. We sat in the lobby when we were between activities. It is nice but has hoards of people touring the hotel. The bathroom faucet leaked and the shower temperature adjustment was broke. Luckily I had a Leatherman tool.
