Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel had a major refurbishment in February, 2018, and reopened with a new lounge, bar and reception area
  • The original manor house was listed in the Domesday Book, and many features, including large stone fireplaces, were retained when the property was rebuilt in 1840
  • Stanton Manor is 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Bath and Bristol are both less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel

Stanton Manor is a 19th-century country house hotel set in seven acres of private grounds in Wiltshire. It was built on the site of a manor house listed in the Domesday Book and once owned by Elizabeth I's Lord High Treasurer and Chief Minister, Lord Burghley. Many of that property's original features, such as large stone fireplaces and ornate furnishings, were retained.

The property is 10 minutes' drive from the historic market town of Chippenham and the edge of the Cotswolds -- "a delightful tangle of gloriously golden villages, thatch-roofed cottages, evocative churches, rickety almshouses and ancient mansions of honey-coloured stone" (Lonely Planet). The historic spa town of Bath and vibrant Bristol -- "the coolest city in Britain", according to Rough Guides -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away.

Bowood House, a historic stately home with landscaped gardens (open April-November), Westonbirt Arboretum and the 13th-century Lacock Abbey are all within a 30-minute drive of the hotel.

In the restaurant, Executive Chef Dean Toon sources ingredients from local farms and producers to create sophisticated menus for lunch and dinner, including a seasonal tasting menu in the evening.

There are 23 rooms at the hotel, all individually designed. Superior Rooms are more spacious than Standard Rooms. Deluxe Rooms feature a king-sized or 4-poster bed. Some also have patios and are pet friendly.

the gardens were beautiful . Sadly there is a constant drone of traffic noise in the garden from the motorway which is extremly close.

The 5 course tasting menu was exceptional.

My confirmation from Travelzoo said "A Superior Room with garden view". However, the room was very dark as there was only one window, with a large tree outside and it overlooked the carpark, not the garden :(

The food was really good

The food was really good although we did have to wait 30 mins for our cooked breakfast to arrive when the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. I heard one customer say to the waitress when his breakfast finally arrived that he thought the chef had gone on strike. Ive done quite a lot of these TravelZoo stays now and in comparison to other hotels that I have stayed at the staff were not as attentive or friendly as I have experienced else where.

The new owners only acquired the hotel a few months ago and so it is a work in progress. All of the staff do their best, but you can't help but feel there is a certain lack of leadership and the finishing touches are often missing. We had room 3, on the first floor. It's a spacious and characterful room, a tad tired, but you can see that the owners are making improvements which is the case throughout the hotel. Neal's Yard toiletries and lashings of hot water abound. Welcome was good at reception and the place is one where you can feel very relaxed doing your own thing whether in the garden or lounge. Clearing tables seems to be something where training is needed, both outside and in. We enjoyed the five course tasting menu and chose our wines from a short but interesting list that was well priced. Food quality was good throughout the meal and the time between courses just right. We were offered pauses during the meal. A very chilled sleep was followed by breakfast, which was ample and of decent quality with a good selection. We would return.

The bedroom and garden were both lovely.

There weren’t enough trained staff on duty at dinner time though the food was good. Not enough staff on at breakfast time as it was too much for 1person to do even with the help of the receptionist.
