Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel had a major refurbishment in February, 2018, and reopened with a new lounge, bar and reception area
  • The original manor house was listed in the Domesday Book, and many features, including large stone fireplaces, were retained when the property was rebuilt in 1840
  • Stanton Manor is 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Bath and Bristol are both less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel

Stanton Manor is a 19th-century country house hotel set in seven acres of private grounds in Wiltshire. It was built on the site of a manor house listed in the Domesday Book and once owned by Elizabeth I's Lord High Treasurer and Chief Minister, Lord Burghley. Many of that property's original features, such as large stone fireplaces and ornate furnishings, were retained.

The property is 10 minutes' drive from the historic market town of Chippenham and the edge of the Cotswolds -- "a delightful tangle of gloriously golden villages, thatch-roofed cottages, evocative churches, rickety almshouses and ancient mansions of honey-coloured stone" (Lonely Planet). The historic spa town of Bath and vibrant Bristol -- "the coolest city in Britain", according to Rough Guides -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away.

Bowood House, a historic stately home with landscaped gardens (open April-November), Westonbirt Arboretum and the 13th-century Lacock Abbey are all within a 30-minute drive of the hotel.

In the restaurant, Executive Chef Dean Toon sources ingredients from local farms and producers to create sophisticated menus for lunch and dinner, including a seasonal tasting menu in the evening.

There are 23 rooms at the hotel, all individually designed. Superior Rooms are more spacious than Standard Rooms. Deluxe Rooms feature a king-sized or 4-poster bed. Some also have patios and are pet friendly.

The Manor has an old world charm and has been sympathetically extended to provide an accommodation wing. Rooms vary in size, layout and price so worth checking. Bar and restaurant are fairly small and functional but the garden and outside area is a delight. Great for smokers or a al fresco tea or coffee in clement weather. Food available in the bar and restaurant is reasonable good as is the range of wines, draft and bottled beers. Breakfasts are good but do not expect fine dining in the evening it is fairly basic fare and function rules over style and sophistication. Staff are young and friendly but relatively untrained and inexperienced so service can be haphazard to the point of exasperation at times. Easily fixed with a better degree of mentoring and supervision at times no one seems to be in overall management or supervision of the premises. However despite a lack of sophistication should you get a deal then the food and accommodation represents good value.

Would really benefit greatly from some pro-active supervision and guidance to very young inexperienced but very helpful and keen staff.

Lovely old house. We were worried about the proximity of the motorway but couldn’t hear anything in our room. The property was very quite so did lack atmosphere.

Our room was very large, well furnished and had a bath and separate shower. The only negative point was the water flow from the shower was poor.

The hotel was very nice. Room was spacious and comfortable. I would say the décor is a tad outdated but nothing offensive. The bathroom was large and the bed very comfortable. My only issue was that when we went for breakfast the staff were unaware we were booked in for B&B and the chef had left apparently and had to be called back - we went in at 9.20am and breakfast finished at 9.30am. We had to wait close on 1/2 hour for breakfast. Full cooked breakfast was nice, I had Eggs Royale which looked fantastic but the eggs were not quite cooked through, the muffin was not toasted and the plate was luke warm which resulted in a very mediocre breakfast sadly. The home made granola was fantastic. The coffee was very weak. All in all the hotel stay was good and we slept like logs but better communication and some tweaks in the kitchen would make it excellent.
