Why We Love It

  • The hotel had a major refurbishment in February, 2018, and reopened with a new lounge, bar and reception area
  • The original manor house was listed in the Domesday Book, and many features, including large stone fireplaces, were retained when the property was rebuilt in 1840
  • Stanton Manor is 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Bath and Bristol are both less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel

Stanton Manor is a 19th-century country house hotel set in seven acres of private grounds in Wiltshire. It was built on the site of a manor house listed in the Domesday Book and once owned by Elizabeth I's Lord High Treasurer and Chief Minister, Lord Burghley. Many of that property's original features, such as large stone fireplaces and ornate furnishings, were retained.

The property is 10 minutes' drive from the historic market town of Chippenham and the edge of the Cotswolds -- "a delightful tangle of gloriously golden villages, thatch-roofed cottages, evocative churches, rickety almshouses and ancient mansions of honey-coloured stone" (Lonely Planet). The historic spa town of Bath and vibrant Bristol -- "the coolest city in Britain", according to Rough Guides -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away.

Bowood House, a historic stately home with landscaped gardens (open April-November), Westonbirt Arboretum and the 13th-century Lacock Abbey are all within a 30-minute drive of the hotel.

In the restaurant, Executive Chef Dean Toon sources ingredients from local farms and producers to create sophisticated menus for lunch and dinner, including a seasonal tasting menu in the evening.

There are 23 rooms at the hotel, all individually designed. Superior Rooms are more spacious than Standard Rooms. Deluxe Rooms feature a king-sized or 4-poster bed. Some also have patios and are pet friendly.

Certainly the excellent staff. The meal was most enjoyable.

Two minor issues; 1. Although our room 10, was very accommodating, it really needed a blind to the bathroom window. 2.At least one extra dinning room staff would help the service.

Very friendly and efficient staff. Great food. Allocated ground floor room with access to the grounds as we were accompanied by our dog. Great paddock for excercising the dog. Very dog friendly and accommodating at meals times as was able to dine with the dog in the bar area. No restricted areas for the dog other than the restaurant. Great home made granola.

This is a very friendly hotel with lovely staff. The room was perfectly fine and the food extremely good. We found it to be an ideal spot for a short break.

The room that was provided for us with our dog.
Other Comments
The reception area when we arrived was not to the expected standard with 2 young ladies sitting behind the reception desk and not being very welcoming on our arrival. It took a few minutes for either one of them to acknowledge our arrival. They were more intent on talking to each and one of these receptionist did nothing at all behind the desk, leaving the other to deal with our arrival, eventually.

The room location. We were supposed to have a room overlooking the garden, but it was overlooking the car park. It was in a noisy position as it was directly above the receptionist. The staff, food and gardens were all excellent. The room and bathroom were not very good. We left notes with the receptionist about our concerns.
