Overview

The Cartwright Hotel is a former coaching inn dating from the 16th century. It is near the Oxfordshire/Northamptonshire border between Banbury and Oxford in the quintessentially English village of Aynho, known affectionately as the Apricot Village due to the abundance of fruit trees. Legend has it that villagers in the cottages used to give apricots to the lords of the manor as rent.

Broughton Castle -- a grand, moated manor house with ornamental gardens -- is around 15 minutes' drive away, or you can visit the Cotswolds countryside, Silverstone Circuit or Bicester Village designer shopping outlet, which are all within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Bletchley Park, the British Motor Museum and Waddesdon Manor -- a 19th-century country house built in the Neo-Renaissance style of a French château -- are all less than 35 minutes away by car.

The hotel features an oak-beamed real-ale bar with a flagstone floor and a wood-burning stove, and dishes served in the candlelit restaurant are made from locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Bedrooms are individually designed and have free Wi-Fi.

Fan heaters as rads not working, vegetarian option of veggie burger was two fritters in a bun but was soooo greasy. Room was a bit tired looking. Could have been amazing though. Loud him through the night, not sure if upstairs room had fan heaters too which were running all night and vibration through floor ??

Caroline and her staff were always very helpful. Plenty of hot water. Beds were comfortable. Breakfasts were plentiful. Location was quiet and convenient.
Other Comments
The bedroom and bathroom would benefit from refurbishment. Updating the bathroom, replacing the windows, fresher decoration and similar would transform the rooms, reduce heating costs and merit a higher price per stay. One example was the electric bathroom heated towel radiator, The connection to which was bound in black tape and had clearly leaked onto the floor at some point.

The bed was very comfortable. Tea making facilities in the room and staff happy to top up tea, milk, sugar if needed. Very good breakfast menu and we ate in both nights.
Other Comments
All staff members very attentive and helpful. Two local walks are suggested in the room brochure, we did one and found it very easy to follow. Many other places of interest within easy reach. We would certainly go back again.
