Overview
The picturesque village of Clearwell on the edge of the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley provides the setting for the 16th-century Tudor Farmhouse. The Guardian calls it a "ridiculously pretty spot" and the perfect place to "retreat, de-stress and regroup".
The building has been lovingly restored, retaining a host of original features including exposed stonework, grand spiral staircases, oak beams, wood panelling and inglenook fireplaces, while adding modern comforts and bedrooms with "great individuality and style", according to The AA Hotel Guide 2018.
The hotel has a roomy reception area, a cosy, candlelit lounge with comfy armchairs, and 20 bedrooms split betweeen the main house and converted buildings in the grounds. Each room has a full-length mirror, a flatscreen TV, tea and coffee with fresh milk and homemade shortbread, and duckdown pillows -- many also have a freestanding bathtub. There is free Wi-Fi throughout and plenty of parking at the back of the property.
The intimate, candlelit restaurant holds two AA Rosettes for its "creative menus" and "quality cuisine", says The AA. Head chef Rob Cox -- recently voted South West Chef of the Year, 2017 -- champions fresh, free-range, organic and local produce, including vegetables from the hotel's kitchen garden and herbs gathered by their forager. "The food is sublime," says The Daily Telegraph.
The hotel sits on the edge of the Forest of Dean: "a magical world of woodland walks, medieval castles, meandering rivers and bleating sheep", according to Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay. There are a whole host of great walking and cycling trails on the doorstep, or you can explore the capacious landscaped gardens, orchards, allotments and 14 acres of grounds surrounding the hotel.
Further afield, you can kayak on the Wye or get muddy walking to Offa's Dyke in the Wye Valley and the hotel can arrange foraging walks, cycling tours, canoeing, salmon fishing and vineyard visits.
Gothic-style Clearwell Castle and the Clearwell Caves mining museum are both a short stroll away. Puzzlewood, a woodland lined with ancient pathways and unique rock formations, is a 5-minute drive away, while Chepstow Racecourse and the ruins of 12th-century Tintern Abbey are within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel.
- "Chic interiors, beautiful rooms, lovely staff, wonderful food" -- Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay
