The 18th-century Lion Hotel is in the town of Criccieth on the Llŷn Peninsula, a 5-minute walk from Criccieth Beach and 15 minutes' drive from Snowdonia National Park — you can see the mountains and the sea from the hotel
Criccieth Castle, which dates back to the 13th century, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Its ruins are perched on a cliff and offer views along the southern coast of the peninsula and over to Harlech
The Llŷn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty occupies more than three quarters of the peninsula. There are walking and cycling routes to explore, secluded beaches to visit, a number of small fishing villages, and 70 miles of coastline
Frommer's describes Criccieth as one of the "best towns on the peninsula", due to its location — the harbour town of Porthmadog is a 10-minute drive away and marks the start of the 91-mile Llŷn Coastal Path, which runs around the peninsula to Caernarfon
Portmeirion, made famous in the TV series "The Prisoner", is 20 minutes drive away. This Italianate village was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis
The property's Mane Place bar is open for drinks 3-11pm Friday-Sunday and 5-11pm Monday-Thursday

Lovely time at this hotel. Staff were welcoming and helpful and sorted out any problems swiftly and without fuss.

The breakfast was very good with lots of choice with wonderful poached eggs on request. We had dinner there on the first evening but the dining room lacks ambience. It would make a huge difference if the evening dining area was sectioned off and updated with modern and colourful dining furniture to look welcoming and jolly. Dinner was not great with over cooked vegetables and uninspiring salmon.

Asked for a twin room with sea view and we got it. Good value for bed and breakfast. Food at dinner was just about ok, menu not changed much over the 4 days and food was pretty mediocre. Room not serviced during our stay, we could request extra tea, coffee, milk etc and request a change of towels. Did expect room to be serviced though.

We chose this purely because I wanted to visit Portmeirion nearby, but we're so pleased we were here. We were a stone's throw from the sea and thought Criccieth was charming, a fact we hadn't known. The service was excellent, with friendly staff, and the meals were good.

We needed a relaxing break and we got that here. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were good with plenty of choice. The room was nicely decorated and clean. It was close to the stairs so there was a fair bit of noise from footsteps, the banging of the fire door and creaky floorboards, but , on the whole, that didn't bother us much. Total lack of reception/service. The rooms were not clean and we had to buy cleaning products to bring it up to an acceptable standard. We returned to hotel bar for last drink after a meal out to find it closed, despite it being advertised as being open until 11pm.
We were put into an annexe building and not advised how to enter it from inside the main hotel and when we returned the hotel was in darkness and we found ourselves unable to get into our rooms. There was no way to contact staff. Eventually after much searching one of our party found a way in.
Breakfast was mediocre, breakfast staff made some effort at least.

Despite all the trials that hospitality in Wales has gone through in the last 2 years it was not evident in the service or menus on offer everything was of high standard. The hotel was spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming. Really good breakfasts and service with a smile, everything was hot and well cooked. We also had a meal in the bar which was really good and we managed to watch Wales v England in the 6 Nations competition which Wales sadly lost but there was a great atmosphere in the bar amongst hotel guests and locals. I decided to stay another night, but was full up. But thankyou for giving me the chance to get all these cheap deals. And it's great to see all the good deals filtering through again after Covid, regards Mary Williams, I've been with you now since 2014, and I've had great deals. Even stayed in Treganna Castle anumber if times where the President Joe Biden stated for the G7, in fact my daughter is going there next week.

Really enjoyed the 3 night break even though hotel very quiet the week before Christmas. Loved the hotel - looked lovely and cosy. Would have given 5* for staff as all were efficient and friendly except for the barman who was seriously lacking the Christmas spirit! Food was very good and room immaculate - looked like it had just been refurbished. Ate in bar one night and food was good. Would very happily go again.

The hotel was perfect for us.Very friendly & helpful staff.Lovely comfortable relaxed atmosphere.Spotlessly clean room. The restaurant was closed as it was winter, but that made no difference as the bar menu was very extensive. The food was first class(& we informed the chef!).Having walking difficulties I was a bit worried about access in an old hotel. No need to worry.I had no problems as we entered the hotel it was flat.(but you do have to park the car at the back of the hotel which created NO problem for us) & there was a lift to our floor. We where on the second floor & the sea & mountain views from our room where stunning.

This was a return to The Lion Hotel as requested by my husband for his birthday as we enjoyed our previous visit and we like the area. The hotel is warm and welcoming with a gas imitation coal fire in the reception area, comfortable seating and a selection of games and books. The bedroom on the first floor, room 12, faces towards Criccieth so in the evening we could see a partial sun set. There is a lift up from the ground floor which we confirmed when booking as my husband has some mobility issues and our room had a walk-in shower and thick bath towels. The bed was really comfortable. Even though the radiator was at zero it was still warm and eventually we opened the double glazed window for a bit of fresh air. It's fair to say that areas of the hotel could do with freshening but that did not detract from the experience. On Friday morning a cooked breakfast was served to order from a comprehensive list of options. On Saturday it was self service from a heated buffet table. Both evenings we ate at the bar and enjoyed our choices from the menu. The portions were generous and after my starter of Welsh rarebit it was as well I hadn't ordered a mains. Most of the attractions around Criccieth were closed out of season but we went down to the beach despite the cold and drove around enjoying the spectacular scenery. We arrived in rain but then had two cold, frosty, sunny days with blue skies which was a bonus. We will have to try and plan another visit in summer.

Check in was quick and easy staff very friendly and welcoming. Our room was very clean and comfortable, if any criticism at all it would be that the room (121) was opposite the door that led out to the car park and several times people would go out and leave the door wide open which meant the cold air coming in affected the temperature in our room even though we had the radiator on, another problem was that while some people left it open others would go through and bang it. The food was excellent both at breakfast and in the evening. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. It is easy to see why the hotel has achieved a 5 hygiene rating. We would definitely stay here again.

The Lion in is a nice place, the cozy front room styles sitting room was welcoming with log burning style gas fires. The reception ladies were very polite and helpful. The bar area is fine. The cooked breakfast was really nice and fresh. Cold choices available to. The room 11 we stayed in had a decent ensuite. Decor was pleasent. The room was very clean. The only thing that was annoying for me was the room.above us had very noisy floors boards and you could hear them walking by around, so first thing and last thing you have the noise of that. One of the single beds(not mine) was creaking all the time so that was annoying to, so every time my son moved it was noisey do these sounds I didn't like at all otherwise a good room.

Our third year visiting in January as it’s usually lovely and quiet to relax and switch off. This year was a lot busier due to a large party booking and sadly we fell unlucky on the first night and were allocated a room above the bar/restaurant which was very noisy. Luckily we were able to change rooms the next day which was much better and allowed us to enjoy the rest of our break in the atmosphere we were used to and enjoyed this time of year. Thank you Travelzoo for enabling us to source a great value weekend break at THe Lion in Criccieth. As there was a wedding on in the hotel, we were allocated rooms in outside courtyaed/car park. Whilst the rooms were small and the decor a little dated, they were clean, had a great view over the castle and bathroom was recently renovated. However, the shower was exceptionally noisy, slow to get to temperature and not very "fierce". I discovered on the second night that the mattress in room 53 is bigger than the bedbase and actualy overhangs - this explained why I had the feeling I was falling out of bed and didn't sleep well. The breakfast each morning was exceptional, the best self serve buffet breakfast I have had. Constantly being freshly restocked, the food was of a very good standard.

We would not hesitate to stay here again. Criccieth is a lovely village, ideally located for expoling and we were even lucky enough to enjoy some sun on the Sunday! Ate out both nights but wish we had seen the food offerings at the Lyon earlier as the options availble were reasonably priced.

First time in Criccieth and really enjoyed the area and Hotel. We went in February so weather was cold and a lot of shops were closed for the winter months. We were very impressed with the Hotel. It was very clean and tidy with a pleasant "feel" to the place. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were excellent in choice and quality.

Very enjoyable - busier than expected as a number of guests staying to attend local wedding. Would certainly return - found a local pub for evening meals which had daily 'specials' as hotel bar crowded (as already mentioned)

We booked a twin room initially as double rooms appeared to be fully booked. However, upon arrival we found that we had been put in a family room (double and two single beds( which was a pleasant surprise.
The hotel is very well located and the rooms were clean and appeared to be recently renovated.
The reception room was lovely, always warm and cosy. Staff were also excellent. The only criticism would be the food in the adjoined pub which wasn't good. Breakfast on the other hand was good as they offered cold breakfast ( cereals) alongside a full english

We stayed in Room 28, which has clearly been recently renovated. Our only criticisms are that the shower head was tiny, with poor water pressure & the temperature was difficult to control. Also, having the bedroom window open meant having to hear, & smell, the smoking area below.

This is a good hotel. We stayed at the Lion Hotel while exploring the North Wales coast. It was excellent. We had a small double room in the new block at the rear of the hotel; excellent, clean, warm with an en-suite bath and comfy bed. Breakfast was excellent with a self-service buffet and dishes cooked to order. My wife enjoyed a generous portion of kippers; I had the full Welsh. The dinner menu was served in the dinning room or bar and had a good selection of dishes and drinks at very reasonable prices. This is a good hotel and we would be happy to stay there again.

The Lion Hotel was excellent value for money and the menu offered a good selection of food and drink at reasonable prices. Bar only open for short periods so couldn’t get food if you wanted a lateish lunch (2.30pm). The Lion seemed to be the only hotel open - all others were being refurbished! Also, only found one other pub open on the day we arrived but it was closed during the day after that as that too was being refurbished. Hardly any shops open. Obviously a bad time of year to visit. Won’t go back.
