Hostal de la Gavina
Why We Love This Hotel
- This “luxe palace” offers “old-school Spanish grandeur” (The Daily Telegraph) on a peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean
- It’s a 10-minute drive from “well-preserved” (Fodor’s) Sant Feliu de Guíxols and 40 minutes by car from Girona
- There’s a fine dining restaurant and a spa with an indoor pool
- Some of the “palatial” (The Daily Telegraph) rooms have sea views
“A byword for Costa Brava luxury since the Twenties”, the Hostal de la Gavina offers “unhurried luxury” in a unique seafront location. Set on a “small peninsula that juts out into the ocean, with beaches on two quiet bays” (Frommer’s), this upscale hotel, whose former guests include Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra, occupies “a sprawling complex of buildings of extraordinary splendour” (Fodor’s) including a “gleaming-white” main villa with a “hint of Moorish style” (Frommer’s), and is located right on the Camino de Ronda coastal trail. Both Santa Cristina d’Aro, home to Club Golf Costa Brava, and Sant Feliu de Guíxols, “a beach town with more than its fair share of historic architecture” (Lonely Planet) are around 10 minutes’ drive away, whilst the “gorgeous walled town” (Lonely Planet) of Pals is a 30-minute drive away. Girona, with its “beautiful walled medieval quarter” (Rough Guide) is 40 minutes drive from the hotel and Figueres, home to Salvador Dali’s “wonderfully bizarre” eponymous museum (Rough Guide) takes approximately an hour to reach by car.
Hostal de la Gavina opens to an “oval-halled reception with inlaid marble flooring, high ceilings, antiques and elaborate floral displays” (The Daily Telegraph). There’s a stately lounge and a library hung with 17th-century tapestries, as well as a wood-panelled nautical-themed bar and a sea-view terrace, where drinks are served. The hotel’s dining options include a “grand, romantic” (Frommer’s) restaurant with a terrace, a casual eatery for tapas and salads, and a poolside spot serving snacks light Mediterranean dishes, and guests can relax in the outdoor pool and in the spa, which houses an indoor pool, a gym and a sauna. Other amenities include two tennis courts and a kids’ club, located across the street from the hotel’s main entrance.
The “confidently luxe” guestrooms at Hostal de la Gavina feature “rich fabrics, carved and sometimes gilded furniture, and lovely architectural details” (Frommer’s), and include free Wi-Fi, TVs and mini bars. Higher tariff rooms add terraces or balconies, some with sea views, whilst lavish suites come with sitting space or separate living areas. The hotel’s top-level suite is decorated in Louis XV style with Sevres vases and a glass chandelier, and a 2-bedroom villa with a kitchen and a private courtyard is also available. Room service is 24 hours.
