Overview

Dating back to 1670, The Trout Hotel is a "handsome riverside hotel" (The Daily Telegraph) located in the market town of Cockermouth. Described as having an "enviable" (The AA) setting, the hotel is next door to Wordsworth House and Garden, the birthplace and childhood home of romantic poet William Wordsworth, and also less than five minutes' walk from the ancient remains of Cockermouth Castle.

The Lakes Distillery, which produces handcrafted spirits including gin, vodka and whisky, is 15 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Bassenthwaite Lake, surrounded by popular hiking trails, is a 10-minute drive and Castlerigg Stone Circle is a 25-minute drive. Catbells, which is one of the most popular fells in the area and rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes and mountains, is a 30-minute drive away.

Loweswater is a 25-minute drive away and Buttermere is a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

The little-known attractions of Crummock Water and Scale Force waterfall, considered the highest waterfall in the Lake District, are 25 minutes' drive away. Wordsworth himself described the waterfall as "a fine chasm, with a lofty, though but slender, fall of water".

The AA-Rosette-awarded Derwent Restaurant is decorated with a Murano glass chandelier and an ornate marble fireplace. The Terrace Bar & Bistro has a conservatory with a retracting roof. There is also a cosy bar and a choice of lounge areas.

Many of the rooms retain period features and overlook the garden or the river. Wi-Fi is free.
