Why We Love It

  • This seaside retreat has an "old-fashioned boarding house charm" (The Daily Telegraph) and a variety of leisure facilities
  • It is five minutes' stroll from Studland Bay's golden-sand beach and is within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Enid Blyton, Winston Churchill, Vivien Leigh and Roald Dahl all stayed at the hotel

The Knoll House is a family-run hotel in a "sensational setting" (The Daily Telegraph) on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. It is five minutes' walk from the National Trust's Studland Bay, which has a 4-mile-long beach with views of Old Harry Rocks. This protected stretch of coastline boasts rugged heathland, nature reserves and crystal-clear waters for bathing and watersports.

The hotel was a regular retreat of children's author Enid Blyton. It is said she used Studland when envisaging Toytown for her "Noddy" books, and that Brownsea Island and Corfe Castle provided inspiration for her "Famous Five" series. The castle, which has over 1000 years of history to delve into, is less than 15 minutes' drive away, as is Swanage, which has a pier and a steam-train railway.

Fort Henry, a Grade II-listed bunker where Winston Churchill, President Eisenhower and King George VI once watched troops rehearsing for D-Day, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Keep an eye out for the pillboxes and Dragon's Teeth anti-tank obstacles dotted about the area.

Another nearby attraction is Aggleston Rock -- a 400-tonne sandstone block also known as the Devil's Anvil -- which is a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk. You can drive 35 minutes to see Durdle Door, or walk 35 minutes along the South West Coast Path towards Shell Bay, where a ferry runs across to Sandbanks peninsula every 20 minutes.

Leisure facilities at the hotel include a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course, tennis courts, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools (the outdoor pool is open from April to September). Dogs can stay in some rooms (£15 per dog, per night; bedding is not provided), but they are prohibited in dining and leisure areas. Wi-Fi is free.

The setting, the Art Deco , period features ,Dogs welcomed; staff, The room with a view, walk to the beach.
Other Comments
The setting is amazing, the view from the bedroom window.the 1930s features, retained. Quiet, lots of compfy sofas, with real log fires. Negatives, we were on a Special, all in price , but our guests found a limited menu , for dinner; at a high price: a medium price should be available, with more choice.. But a very Special place , indeed: please don't let it change .

Great staff exceptionally helpful and made us and our dog very welcome. The hotel is bit dated and requires an uplift. Sarah, Damian and Steve excellent staff members.

Friendly staff.
Other Comments
The whole place is completely run down. Whilst the food was Ok, there were so many things 'off the menu. Apparently run out of. Well I'm sorry, but if you know how many booked In, and it's a very small set menu, it should be easy to plan. Same thing happened at breakfast. Ran out of both fish choices...and there were on 3 options on the cooked choice! We left after one night.

Room small and too hot even with heating turned off, restaurant freezing cold with no heating. Bar prices extortionate. Tried to charge me extra for meals included in deal.
