Domaine Saint Clair Le Donjon offers a “charming” (Fodor’s) stay overlooking the coastal town of Étretat and its distinctive white cliffs. Set in sprawling tree-filled parkland, this Belle Époquehotel occupies an “ivy-covered, Anglo-Norman château” (Fodor’s) and adjacent villa, dating from the 19th-century, and is located a 5-minute stroll from Étretat centre and a 20-minute walk from Golf d’Étretat’s seafront 18-hole course. Both Renaissance-inspired Benedictine Palace, site of the liqueur’s distillery and a history museum, and Les Jardins de Louanne, home to over 500 species of plant, are about 20 minutes’ drive away, whilst MuMa, Le Havre’s museum of modern art, known for its extensive collection of Impressionist paintings, takes about 40 minutes to reach by car.
Dark red walls, gilt-framed paintings and black-and-white checked flooring distinguish Domaine Saint Clair Le Donjon’s refined interiors, which feature five guest lounges including a library with plush leather armchairs, as well as a bar finished in exposed brick and opening to an indoor plant-lined patio warmed by a wood-burning stove. In the sea-view restaurant, guests can dine on local cuisine made using ingredients from “the hotel’s organic herb and vegetable garden” (Fodor’s), and there’s a seasonal outdoor pool and relaxation area offering a range of massages and beauty treatments (fees apply).
Named after famous figures including Flaubert, Monet and Sarah Bernhardt, the guestrooms are “spacious, comfortable…with the emphasis on "individual" - vast swaths of red fabric, decorator mirrors, and antique gramophones are some flamboyant accents” (Fodor’s). All include free Wi-Fi, TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities, as well as distinct touches such as Jacuzzi tubs and garden access. Higher tariff rooms add balconies, whilst suites come with sitting areas and sea views.
