Overview

Opening on the grounds of the former Salvation Army Building, the Distrikt hotel embraces its history by converting the property’s chapel into a lobby and bar, making the gym into a posh restaurant and restoring stained-glass windows. Elements like vaulted beams, original woodwork and the building's limestone exterior from 1923 remain intact, while amenities like free Wi-Fi and express checkout cater to the needs of modern travelers.

All accommodations are outfitted with Keurig coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth alarm clocks and refrigerators. Rooms are furnished with large wardrobes, comfortable seating areas, desks and the choice of a king or queen bed. Visitors can upgrade to larger rooms with two queen beds, suites with sofa beds or the penthouse that includes a private balcony.

Guests have exclusive access to the tenth floor terrace with sweeping views of the skyline stretching to South Side and Mount Washington. The property features a 24-hour fitness center and offers complimentary bicycles for guests to borrow during the summer season.

Housed in the historic building’s former gymnasium, the hotel's restaurant, or, The Whale -- a reference to Herman Melville’s classic “Moby Dick” -- will serve a sustainable menu sourced from local farms with the option to dine on the lofted running track or in the main dining area with views of the butcher room. The nautical-themed restaurant will open this month and is to be headed by acclaimed chef Dennis Marron, who opened Hotel Monaco‘s The Commoner in 2015. Evangeline is open from morning to night, offering coffee and juice by day and cocktails and oysters in the evenings.

In the heart of Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle, the hotel is within a 20-minute walk of PPG Paints Arena (home to the 2017 Stanley Cup-winning Penguins), the riverfront Point State Park and David L. Lawrence Convention Center. PNC Park, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and the Andy Warhol Museum are just across the river.

The only thing we didn’t like was waiting an hour and a half to check in when we arrived at 3:00

This is a very nice, brand new hotel, with a very good restaurant, and a great bar. Staff was amazing! Room was a bit small, and the location is ok, but not great -- still within easy walking distance of any downtown Pittsburgh target.

The friendly staff, rooftop lounge at night, and fabulous brunch at the in-house restaurant, "or The Whale."
