Why We Love It

  • The property provides "opulent luxury in a stunning lakeside setting", says The AA
  • The restaurant holds two AA Rosettes
  • The pretty town of Ambleside, where you can see Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, is a 15-minute drive away
  • Wray Castle is 20 minutes' drive away, while Castlerigg Stone Circle and Hardknott Roman Fort are both less than 50 minutes' drive away

Miller Howe has a "stunning" (The AA) setting overlooking Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park. The region, which Lonely Planet praises for its "craggy hilltops, mountain tarns and glittering lakes", has abundant outdoor activities, from lake cruises to mountain walks, and it is also renowned for its literary connections, with William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Beatrix Potter all having lived here.

The pretty town of Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away. From here you can follow a wooded path to Stock Ghyll Force, a 70-foot-high waterfall, or try following one of several hiking routes to Grasmere to see Dove Cottage, which belonged to Wordsworth.

Wray Castle, a mock-Gothic castle on the shores of Lake Windermere, is 20 minutes' drive away. Predator Experience, where you can see birds of prey, try falconry and walk with wolves, is less than 25 minutes' drive away. Castlerigg, a Neolithic stone circle with views of Helvellyn and Skiddaw, is a 40-minute drive away.

The remote Hardknott Roman Fort is a 50-minute drive away. Built in the second century, it is now an archeological site containing the remains of the Roman fort Mediobogdum.

The restaurant, which has been awarded two AA Rosettes, creates "imaginative dinners" using "fresh, local produce where possible" (The AA).

Lake View Rooms and Cottage Rooms have balconies with views of Lake Windermere towards the Langdale Pikes. Cottage Rooms are a short walk from the main building. Wi-Fi is free.

We have enjoyed a few visits to Miller Howe and because the service and food is so good it never disappoints. We will certainly return to this beautiful peaceful hotel.

beautiful views of Lake Windermere. Staff very helpful
Other Comments
Was not informed by Travelzoo that the cottage room was some distance from main hotel and accessed by numerous sets of steps outside and a further 13 steps up to the room which made it totally unsuitable for anyone with mobility limitations. The cottage rooms are not of the standard of the hotel rooms. Fortunately the Manager was eventually able to find us a room in the hotel as he could see I could not manage the steps involved in getting to and from cottage to hotel for meals and drinks.

Quietness and unobtrusive attention from the staff. View was good too

Suggest they rethink the offer detail. It offered cream tea which was just a couple of scones. They were very good but we had been expecting more. If scones had been offered we would have been content. Also service at dinner was rather slow but the food was excellent.

I had specifically requested a wheelchair accessible room and that need was not met. There is no lift in the hotel and 2 flights of stairs. What an indignity to be carried by members of the public up those stairs. The staff didn’t care at all
