Overview

“A bolthole for bon vivants” (The Daily Telegraph), Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de la Celle combines “charming” (ViaMichelin) accommodation with award-winning dining in a traditional Provençal setting. This Alain Ducasse-owned hotel occupies a shutter-lined lodging adjoining a former 12th-century Benedictine abbey and is set on a shaded corner of a square in the picturesque village of La Celle. The Coteaux Varois wine-growing region, known for its abundant leafy vineyards and lush countryside ideal for hiking and biking trips, surrounds the hotel, while Entrecasteaux with its 16th-century castle and the landmark Abbeye de Thoronet are both about a 30-minute drive away. For city-based excursions, Aix-en-Provence and Cannes are within an hour’s drive.

Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de la Celle’s refined interiors are “beautifully restored” (Fodor’s), and include a sun lounge with a wooden floor and leather armchairs, as well as a boutique housed in an ornate converted chapel. There’s an outdoor pool built on Roman remains and offering mountain and vineyard views, as well as extensive gardens featuring ancient cypresses, vegetable patches and fountains. At the Michelin-star restaurant spread over three individually decorated rooms, guests can sample a changing menu of seasonal cuisine, which offers “a superb balance between taste and texture” and includes dishes such as “hake with sweet almond purée and gnocchi, or saddle of lamb with squash and fried chickpea panisse” (Fodor’s). Outdoor dining is available on the chestnut tree-lined terrace. Bikes are available free of charge.

The 10 rooms are decorated in an “elegant and understated” (The Daily Telegraph) style and are furnished with antiques. All the rooms include free Wi-Fi, TVs, and minibars. DVD players are available upon request. Higher-tariff rooms add touches such as 4-poster beds, living areas, as well as roll-top baths and carved-wood bedheads. Rooms in the Annex have semi-private gardens. There are also two suites, including one with a loft bedroom and one with silk curtains and intricate wall mouldings.

From the press:
  • “Guest rooms mix Louis XVI and regional accents, private gardens, and vineyard views” – Fodor’s
  • "The Hostellerie de L’Abbaye’s trump card is its gastronomy… the kitchen does particularly wonderful things with lamb” – The Daily Telegraph
