Why We Love It

  • The AA Hotel Guide 2017 praises the hotel's "stunning sea views" and "prominent position" on the Kent coast
  • You can dine in the AA-Rosette-awarded Coast Restaurant, or sip champagne cocktails in the Moët & Chandon Bar
  • Folkestone is 10 minutes' drive from the hotel and Dover's port takes 20 minutes

The Hythe Imperial hotel is a 4-star retreat set along Hythe's stretch of shingle beach in Kent. The property was constructed in 1880 as a railway hotel and is currently nearing the end of a long-term renovation project, so please use the Leisure Club entrance doors until further notice. There will also be external scaffolding on the side of the hotel until June 2018.

Hythe belongs to The Confederation of Cinque Ports -- a collection of maritime towns that once provided military support to The Crown. Reminders of Hythe's past are everywhere -- the Royal Military Canal runs just behind the hotel. Keep an eye out for the Martello Towers, which were built as a defence against a Napoleonic invasion. Sandgate Castle is also less than 10 minutes' drive or 45 minutes' walk away.

You can hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway -- a 13-mile-long line with miniature steam and diesel trains -- which has been running between Hythe and Dungeness for almost a century. Romney Marsh, an expanse of 100 square miles once submerged beneath the English Channel, now dotted with towns, is two miles west of the hotel. The hilltop town of Rye is 40 minutes' drive away, and Dover is 20 minutes' drive.

"This imposing seafront hotel is enhanced by impressive grounds including a 13-green golf course and pleasing gardens," according to The AA Hotel Guide 2017. Other facilities include a gym, a spa, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and a swimming pool.

You can sample seasonal British cuisine in the AA-Rosette-awarded Coast Restaurant, or dine in the in-house Indian restaurant. The Moët & Chandon Bar, opened in 2016, operates Wednesday-Sunday, and serves a variety of wines and cocktails.

Atmosphere, staff, food quality and overall value for money.
Other Comments
Staff were excellent, as was the in-house Indian Restaurant.

No. It was pretentious and did not live up to it's own hype.
Other Comments
Hot air heating in room meaning the air was either a hot dry wind or when turned off freezing cold. The duvet was cheap polyester, which had no wicking quality at all. Last but not least the mattress was cheap, therefore bouncy which meant my husband spent the night on the floor so I could get some sleep. I suggest this hotel gets buying advice from the Madjeski Reading where we spent the previous 2 nights and had an excellent nights sleep.
