Maritime Hotel is a clifftop hotel on the Isle of Portland, 20 minutes' drive from Weymouth. Lonely Planet recommends the island's "rich bird life", "starkly beautiful cliffs" and "jaw-dropping views".

You can head to Portland Bill lighthouse and its visitor centre for great views of the English Channel from 135 feet up -- its around 20 minutes' walk from the hotel. Walkers can join the South West Coast Path from the hotel and walk to Chesil Beach for a chance to see rugged clifftops and caves. This 18-mile-long stretch of shingle beach connects Portland to the mainland, is around and is hour's walk along the path, or 10 minutes away by car.

The seaside town of Weymouth and its attractions -- including Jurassic Skyline, an observation tower that offers views up to 16 miles away from 174 feet above the ground -- are around 30 minutes' drive away. The town is hosting several events throughout the summer, including Gin Festival Weymouth (3 June), Wessex Folk Festival (3-5 June), The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival (8-9 July). Durdle Door, a picturesque limestone arch on the Purbeck Heritage Coast, is less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The Royal Navy were present on Portland until the 1990s, and the hotel is a former Admiralty Under Weapon Establishment -- a naval building where defence weapons were developed and tested. It has since been transformed into a modern hotel enjoying panoramic views of the 95-mile-long Jurassic Coast. The hotel has a restaurant with floor-to-ceilings windows, a bar and an outside terrace.

The hotel is dog friendly -- be sure to say hello to Hugo and Hooch, the hotel's own pooches. Pets can stay in select rooms for an extra £15 per night.

This was a dog friendly hotel and I was very impressed with the way they dealt with this. Dogs were not allowed in the restaurant, but they had a very pleasant bar area where dog owners could eat accompanied by their dogs. I would recommend for dog owners.

Cold hotel, no heating in room, except a free standing oil filled radiator, very small potions with the food, our starter and main course tiny, I overheard one person saying about his breakfast, is this a starter?

We arrived on a cold, wet and windy day and we found the room cold. We had a small electric radiator in the room and I was disappointed as we were not told the heating was broken. We would turn the radiator off when we’re not there but then when we returned it wasn’t warm . We went down for breakfast and had to wait for a table. Then had to wait for milk at the breakfast cereal bar and for our drinks as there wasn’t any. The waiter told us ‘I think we have probably run out altogether let me check’. Then had a long wait for our breakfast to arrive. We had our dinner in the restraunt one evening and our waitress (a young lady/slim/long hair) didn’t smell very nice, she had poor hygiene and it wasn’t nice to think she was bringing us our food.

Hotel very dirty, restaurant cold, food was very disappointing and very limited choice.Bathroom tiles black with mould. Room very dated and the bed very uncomfortable. Over odour in the corridors like a nursing home. Building work going on with rubbish everywhere. We paid for two nights, but came home after spending the first night there.Ive never been so pleased to be going home.

Smart interior, large bedrooms, modern, friendly staff, lovely food.
Other Comments
The smell of cigarettes was coming into foyer from rear door being slightly open in reception. Written directions to the hotel would be useful, we went round the housing estate twice as we missed a small turning.

Spacious bedrooms, decorated nicely.
Other Comments
Numerous notices telling me what not to do. Don't press the lift button more than once. Don't put bread in the toaster more than once. Don't bring food into the bedrooms.
