Maritime Hotel is a clifftop hotel on the Isle of Portland, 20 minutes' drive from Weymouth. Lonely Planet recommends the island's "rich bird life", "starkly beautiful cliffs" and "jaw-dropping views".

You can explore Portland Bill lighthouse for great views of the English Channel or join the South West Coast Path from the hotel and walk to Chesil Beach, for a chance to see rugged clifftops and caves. Chesil Beach, an 18-mile stretch of shingle beach that connects Portland to the maindland, is around and hour's walk along the path, or 10 minutes by car.

The seaside town of Weymouth and its attractions -- including Jurassic Skyline, an observation tower that offers views up to 16 miles away from 174 feet above the ground -- are around 30 minutes' drive away. The town is hosting several events throughout the summer, including Gin Festival Weymouth (3 June), Wessex Folk Festival (3-5 June), The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival (8-9 July). Durdle Door, a picturesque limestone arch on the Purbeck Heritage Coast, is less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The Royal Navy were present on Portland until the 1990s, and the hotel is a former Admiralty Under Weapon Establishment -- a naval building where defence weapons were developed and tested. It has since been transformed into a modern hotel enjoying panoramic views of the 95-mile-long Jurassic Coast. The hotel has a restaurant with floor-to-ceilings windows, a bar and an outside terrace.

Actually, the reviews were so bad and the weather was horrid, we decided not to go. This hotel needs to use customer feedback and not be so defensive. Travelzoo should stay well away in my opinion. I did try to change the date and was met with a bad attitude, the reply to my email was laughable...

The lobster was amazing. The standard of the rooms and the cleanliness around the hotel was great and the young lad who helped at reception, and the restaurant in the evening was brilliant
Other Comments
The girl who was supposed to man the reception was hardly ever available and there was often no-one at reception. Even when the notice on reception said to go to the first floor she still wasn't available to check out and whenever she was on reception she was not happy

The location is very nice with the Portland Bill Lighthouse right down the trail, with views along the trail to take your breath away. Also had nice breakfast area, and outdoor deck that had great views as well.

Friends and I visited here with our dogs as a weekend get-a-way from London. However, the hotel's house dogs had a go at both mine and our guest dogs. In addition it just seemed that there were a lot of issues to iron out, as the most often used words we heard from the staff when engaging guests were, "we are sorry". It was a nice place however I think next time we are visiting Portland, we might look at other hotel options on the island. To us it didn't stand up to the Travel Zoo caliber that we expected, and we felt bad with bringing our friends along having to apologies for the hotel. In addition still waiting for a promised refund from 3 months ago now.

The attention to detail in the decor was lovely. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was first class. The staff were both friendly and efficient, nothing was too much trouble. Nice bar with a sun terrace. Amazing weekend - thank you everyone at the Maritime Hotel. We will be back.

The breakfast, the location, the cleanliness of the hotel. The friendliness of some of the staff.
Other Comments
The Hotel has a smell of dogs. Not surprising as there are 2 very large dogs that live there. Also the hotel welcomes dog owners with their pooches as guests.
