Overview

Maritime Hotel is a clifftop hotel on the Isle of Portland, 20 minutes' drive from Weymouth. Lonely Planet recommends the island's "rich bird life", "starkly beautiful cliffs" and "jaw-dropping views".

You can explore Portland Bill lighthouse for great views of the English Channel or join the South West Coast Path from the hotel and walk to Chesil Beach, for a chance to see rugged clifftops and caves. Chesil Beach, an 18-mile stretch of shingle beach that connects Portland to the maindland, is around and hour's walk along the path, or 10 minutes by car.

The seaside town of Weymouth and its attractions -- including Jurassic Skyline, an observation tower that offers views up to 16 miles away from 174 feet above the ground -- are around 30 minutes' drive away. The town is hosting several events throughout the summer, including Gin Festival Weymouth (3 June), Wessex Folk Festival (3-5 June), The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival (8-9 July). Durdle Door, a picturesque limestone arch on the Purbeck Heritage Coast, is less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The Royal Navy were present on Portland until the 1990s, and the hotel is a former Admiralty Under Weapon Establishment -- a naval building where defence weapons were developed and tested. It has since been transformed into a modern hotel enjoying panoramic views of the 95-mile-long Jurassic Coast. The hotel has a restaurant with floor-to-ceilings windows, a bar and an outside terrace.

Polite and helpful staff but it was all a bit 'military' and only the very basics provided. The electricity in our room was turned off on the dot of 10.00am on the departure day! It still has the feel of on MOD building. More colour and greenery needed to give it a welcoming feel. Very mixed styles of interior design. It is in a unique and interesting spot, and a good place to explore from.

We were concerned when we booked in as there was a man sitting behind the reception desk asleep. The young girl that booked us in was incredibly professional and so we didn't intervene. However we had to return to the desk some 20 minutes later to ask a question and now the man was snoring very loudly. We were not sure if he was ill, suffering from narcolepsy or awaiting medical attention. I was about to offer help when the young lady was joined by a young man so I left them to it. Really not sure what was going on and don't want to be judgemental but it isn't what you expect to find when booking in to a hotel. I can only guess that this man was ill.

Some of the hotel information and literature should be less 'officious' and more welcoming

Quirky building, glad I read what to expect beforehand! Lovely interior, room was great and bed very large and comfortable. Fabulous taking in the view in the sunshine from the roof top terrace.

We chose not to eat dinner in the hotel restaurant as it took a while for the menu to be put out and when it was finally put out on view there wasn't really anything that took our fancy plus we thought that £15.95 for a main course was a little on the expensive side. We walked a few minutes down the road to the Eight Kings pub which was nice (busy though so book if you can). The only other things that we pointed out to reception was that the kettle was very limescaled so we didn't even make a hot drink in our room and also the showerhead needed bleaching. All in all though a lovely experience and would definitely stay again and recommend to friends.
