Maritime Hotel is a clifftop hotel on the Isle of Portland, 20 minutes' drive from Weymouth. Lonely Planet recommends the island's "rich bird life", "starkly beautiful cliffs" and "jaw-dropping views".

You can explore Portland Bill lighthouse for great views of the English Channel or join the South West Coast Path from the hotel and walk to Chesil Beach, for a chance to see rugged clifftops and caves. Chesil Beach, an 18-mile stretch of shingle beach that connects Portland to the maindland, is around and hour's walk along the path, or 10 minutes by car.

The seaside town of Weymouth and its attractions -- including Jurassic Skyline, an observation tower that offers views up to 16 miles away from 174 feet above the ground -- are around 30 minutes' drive away. The town is hosting several events throughout the summer, including Gin Festival Weymouth (3 June), Wessex Folk Festival (3-5 June), The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival (8-9 July). Durdle Door, a picturesque limestone arch on the Purbeck Heritage Coast, is less than an hour's drive from the hotel.

The Royal Navy were present on Portland until the 1990s, and the hotel is a former Admiralty Under Weapon Establishment -- a naval building where defence weapons were developed and tested. It has since been transformed into a modern hotel enjoying panoramic views of the 95-mile-long Jurassic Coast. The hotel has a restaurant with floor-to-ceilings windows, a bar and an outside terrace.

A bath mat and a loo brush would have been usefull and we doubt that much of the breakfast was freshly cooked.

The view from the restaurant and the friendliness of the staff.

Was surprised at the location (on an old industrial estate) but it works well for Portland as it is easy reach of everywhere on the "island" and most of the industrty has long gone. Breakfast was OK but more "Continental" choices would have been good.
