Cambridge's newest hotel, Tamburlaine, opened in March 2017. This £50 million property has caused quite the stir -- with The Daily Telegraph claiming it "represents a remarkable step forward" for the city's hotel scene, describing it as the "most exciting opening in years".

Tamburlaine is next to Cambridge railway station; most of the city's attractions, including the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, the King's College Chapel, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Trinity College, can be reached within 25 minutes by foot.

The hotel is named after "Tamburlaine the Great" -- a 16th-century play written by Christopher Marlowe, who studied at the city's Corpus Christi Catholic College. The play is set in central Asia and the hotel's owners have used the Asian link to influence some of the décor. The Times notes the "geometric patterns on carpets, neat hexagonal tiles in the lobby, and fine bone china with Middle Eastern designs".

There are 155 bedrooms, a lobby with modern chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and a library, which, according to The Daily Telegraph, has a "cosy atmosphere… induced by sagging bookshelves, panelled walls and snug furniture". There's also a brasserie restaurant, a cocktail bar, a deli and a colonial-style garden room where guests can enjoy cream tea.

From the press:

  • "Cambridge has a stylish and comfortable new bolt hole run by friendly staff" -- The Times

  • "The Tamburlaine represents a remarkable step forward for a city that, otherwise, has a remarkable dearth of decent accommodation options" -- The Daily Telegraph

The hotel lacked any kind of in-room information of leaflets. We ordered room service for lunch and had to google the menu from the hotel's website, which apparently was different to the menu the chef had so we spent a long time repeating what we were trying to order as the chef had no idea what it was, but we had no other menu to refer to/ choose from.

The room was very comfortable and clean. Provision of a hospitality tray and water in the fridge was also very good.
Other Comments
I found the evening menu rather limited and lacking variety. Although the hotel does not have its own parking the station parking is convenient and good value at the weekend

Plush rooms and giant beds!
Other Comments
The offer included a cream tea. The hotel advertise their tea menu as being available in their gorgeous garden room but when we arrived we were rudely shunted to the restaurant and informed that the (cheaper) cream tea was served there while the more expensive ones in the gardens room. At breakfast people waited for more than 15 minutes to be seated while there were plenty of tables free, and we had to prompt everything from getting a cup of coffee to getting a plate! The buffet was lacking and the bread dry.
