Why We Love This Hotel

  • This cosy hotel is in a picturesque village in Northumberland, 10 minutes' drive from Hadrian's Wall
  • The restaurant serves local produce and has won multiple awards for sustainability
  • You can stargaze at the on-site observatory, under the darkest skies in England (supplements apply)

Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze (supplements apply). Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property has impressive eco-friendly credentials. It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17, the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, the Sustainable Business Award in the 2019 Catey Awards, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

We've also negotiated a tasting-menu meal for two, for £39.

Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

There was nothing to fault from our experience. Friendly, helpful staff in a warm environment. Out room was large, warm and immaculate with tea/coffee, chilled water, fresh fruit and biscuits provided. Whilst we were there the clouds broke and the stars were amazing, there is an observatory close to the grounds.

Excellent hotel made even better by the helpful staff. Meals were very good too and despite the overnight below freezing temperature outside, the bedroom was more than warm enough.
Other Comments
Only fault was a leak from the shower hose and that was fixed the following morning even before we had gone out for the day. Very good service.
