Why We Love It

  • This cosy hotel is in a picturesque village in Northumberland, 10 minutes' drive from Hadrian's Wall
  • The restaurant serves local produce and holds multiple awards for sustainability
  • You can stargaze at the on-site observatory, under the darkest skies in England

Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze. Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property is "one of the greenest hotels in the country, with a host of different eco-friendly systems in place" (The AA). It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17 and the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

Rooms are "well-appointed and presented with quality beds, décor and flooring as standard" (The AA). Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

The food was amazing on the eight course taster meal.

I appreciated the fact that they provided their own energy from the very large solo panel at the back of the hotel. Plus, some of the food was grown in their garden, which was delicious

Food was lovely and the staff were very helpful and pleasant
Other Comments
Wark is just a small village with not much alternative for other places to go to eat and drink, however, because Battlesteads was so nice there was no need to go elsewhere. Have passed on the recommendation to work colleagues and my brother.

Majority of staff did not appear happy at their work and this came across with the service and we felt rushed. The tasting meal was good as was the dark sky experience despite it being a cloudy night.
