Why We Love It

  • This 17th-century hotel is in a rural Devon village
  • It's a 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • There's an elegant restaurant and a cosy bar with a fireplace

Lifton Hall Hotel is housed in three ivy-clad 17th-century cottages with colourful window boxes. The hotel is a few minutes' drive from the Devon-Cornwall border and is in easy reach of the pretty countryside in both counties.

It's 10 minutes' drive from Cornwall's ancient capital, Launceston, which is known for its Norman castle, steam railway and independent shops; and a 20-minute drive from the market town of Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding National Beauty, which is dotted with picturesque villages and is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, is around 15 minutes' drive away. Padstow is around an hour's drive from the hotel. It has a lively port and well-known fish restaurants.

One of Lifton Hall Hotel's highlights is its locally sourced food. Devon Life readers voted the restaurant's Sunday roast the best in Devon. The décor features rich fabrics and Gothic windows. The rustic-style bar area sports wood-beamed ceilings and a fireplace. There is also an outside patio with tables and chairs.

The hotel's 10 bedrooms are individually decorated in a cosy, country style. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities, as well as views of the village or the countryside. Some rooms have wood-panelled walls and 4-poster beds.

This is a quaint, traditional hotel which is beautifully presented. The proprietors have decorated and furnished the rooms to a very high standard with attention to every detail.

The food is expertly prepared by Robert with high quality local ingredients. Our 4 course dinner was delicious and breakfast is as good as we have ever had. Once again aTtention to detail is impeccable. Thanks for a lovely stay.

IF IF IF we wanted to complain about anything it would be the breakfast. The cooked breakfasts were absolutely wonderful, but there was very little choice on the table for people who didn't want cooked. No fresh fruit (only dried). Some yoghourt would have been nice perhaps.

Could of done with a fan in the room due to the heat, had to leave the window open which then let in traffic noise.

Rooms are all different and quirky. Food was good but not exceptional. Some staff were superb and some a bit slow. We were made to always feel welcome. Room well equipped with tea and coffee etc. It was good to have a sofa in the room and for hotel to be dog friendly. Thank you
