Overview

Barns Hotel has a "tranquil location on the outskirts of Bedford" (The AA) with views of the River Great Ouse.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, a wildlife park with over 1000 animals and both road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma Code, is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House is less than 20 minutes' drive away -- this ruined mansion house has views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive wine list, with a wide selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio overlooking the River Great Ouse.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished and have spacious bathrooms. All have free Wi-Fi.

riverside location and setting. Very pleasant staff
Other Comments
The approach has modern warehousing around but does not interfere with the pleasant location of the hotel unlike a trip advisor reviewer has indicated.

Lovely setting beside the River Ouse. There was plenty of car parking. Easy to drive and park into Bedford - a pleasant town with good shopping again situated beside the wide River Ouse.
Other Comments
Executive Room was extremely good - clean, quiet and well fitted en suite, together with a large comfortable bed. A large timbered Tithe Barn in the grounds was extremely popular for wedding, banquets and conferences. A glass of prosecco as part of the deal went down well.

Breakfast was good. The morning table service chap was helpful and tried his best ( but was left thinking he had been let down by lack of training from management.
Other Comments
The all round customer service experience was below par to other similarly priced hotels we have stayed at. Menu choice was limited and the monkfish turned out be tough and stringy (over cooked).

The comfortable room, a good evening meal and breakfast. The staff were pleasant and welcoming.
Other Comments
Room 35 needs some extra lighting. It is very dark because of the surrounding large trees. It was impossible to read even in the afternoon. Some standard lamps near the bed would have improved my enjoyment of our stay.
