Why We Love This Hotel

  • The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant uses local produce and offers a selection of local Cumbrian cheeses
  • The hotel holds VisitEngland Gold and Breakfast Awards, and is in a "peaceful location" (The AA) at the foot of the Great Gable and Scafell Massif mountains
  • The landscape surrounding the hotel is described as "simply spellbinding" by Lonely Planet
  • Derwentwater -- great for lake cruises and walks by the water's edge -- is a 10-minute drive away, and Ambleside Roman Fort is less than 50 minutes' drive away

"amazing fish and chips at the hotels pu which had a good selection of real ales, great crack with the staff and the locals are something else !!"

Scafell Hotel is set in the tranquil valley of Borrowdale, among precipitous crags and secluded woodland. The hotel is less than 10 minutes' drive from Derwentwater, a popular hiking and fishing destination, and 15 minutes' drive from the market town of Keswick. Keswick Launch Company operates daily boat trips on Derwentwater from Keswick Landing Pier.

The Theatre By the Lake is less than 15 minutes' drive from the hotel and Castlerigg Stone Circle, thought to be 5000 years old, is 20 minutes' drive away. Lake District Wildlife Park is 30 minutes' drive away.

The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant offers a fine-dining evening menu, Sunday lunches and hearty Cumbrian breakfasts made with locally sourced produce. There is also a Lounge Bar, which has a more casual setting, and The Riverside Bar, which serves snacks.

It’s lovely and the food is exceptional. It’s a bit ‘decayed splendour’ needing a bit of tlc but there are some wonderful touches and it’s very clean, comfortable and friendly. Many of our fellow guests were returnees and that’s easy to understand. If you want great location, staff and superb food, this is a really lovely hotel.

The food was good but was only given the option to have soup for the first course at the deal price paid - any other choice was an extra £5!. Think this was a bit measly - there was plenty of choice for main and dessert so why create an issue with the starters?

room and bed a little on the small side if you are with travel zoo. They have bigger rooms but normally for full paying guests. understandable and wouldn't put me off going back again
