Overview

Those looking to escape without sacrificing luxury can book one of just 49 suites on the rolling hills of Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa. The Spanish-style casitas are nestled within the property’s 45 acres of olive groves and wildflower gardens. Opened in 1989, the resort was named the No. 1 hotel in Southern California in Travel + Leisure's World’s Best Awards (2016), and it is still the region’s only Relais & Châteaux property.

Behind clay-colored walls draped in bougainvillea, guest rooms feature cathedral ceilings, fireplaces with hand-painted tiles and French doors leading to private patios. All suites are equipped with Illy Café Espresso machines, flat-screen TVs, Bang & Olufsen stereos and Bose sound systems. Upgraded villas include marble bathrooms, jetted plunge pools and private terraces equipped with outdoor fireplaces. The private Hacienda is ideal for groups traveling together and features three bedrooms with king beds and private patios, a full kitchen and a huge terrace with a private pool, whirlpool tub, grill and fireplace.

All guests enjoy free croquet, bocce, and resort bicycles for cycling into Rancho Santa Fe. Active guests can work out in the fitness center, choose between 95 weekly exercise classes and enroll in the top-rated tennis program. Afterwards, soothe muscles in one of the two heated saltwater pools or select from a menu of seven massages in the 12,000-square-foot spa.

At Veladora, by candlelight, guests are served upscale California cuisine that Condé Nast Traveler calls “almost too pretty to eat (almost).” The Pony Room offers traditional American fare in a more casual atmosphere, along with locally crafted beer and over 100 tequilas. The menu at Rein Poolside retreat includes small plates of coastal cuisine along with chilled cocktails and rosé. For a break from the sun, sample rare wines in the brick wine cave overlooking the eucalyptus grove or book the space for an intimate dinner party.

From the press:
  • "Set amid the polo fields and horse ranches of the San Dieguito Valley, draws a well-heeled crowd" -- Condé Nast Traveler
  • "If you’re looking for something secluded, this is it" -- Forbes Travel Guide
