Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina

Why We Love This Hotel

  • The resort and sites around Newport were filming locations for the 2019 season of "The Bachelorette"
  • Located on Goat Island, the resort has three pet goats — Cornelia, Henry and Cooper — named after members of the Vanderbilt family
  • It's less than 10 minutes from downtown on foot; there's also a complimentary Mercedes shuttle service if you don't feel like walking
  • A chic, modern alternative to Newport's historic inns — even the fitness center feels upscale, thanks to perks like eucalyptus-scented towels

"Staff was very accommodating."

Sure, Newport is best known for its gilded-age mansions and historical landmarks, like St. Mary's Church — site of John and Jackie Kennedy's wedding. However, Gurney's Resort feels decidedly contemporary: Loads of natural light and sweeping views of the Narragansett Bay greet guests as they step into the lobby, which by the way, is decked out with nautically inspired furniture like rope-netted chairs. There are also 21st-century amenities like Mercedes shuttle service into downtown and an on-site spa, where guests can choose among 40 sea-themed treatments.

The nautical-chic vibe extends into guest rooms, too, thanks to their blue, white and gray color palette offset by midcentury modern furnishings. They also come with granite counters in the bathrooms, 47-inch flat-screen TVs and beds that are "utterly comfortable" (The Telegraph). For unfettered vantages of the harbor, we recommend upgrading to a Waterview room.

Four on-site dining options include craft cocktails at the Lounge & Firepit, where guests can catch sweeping views of the sunset. There's also a seasonal poolside bar as well as a cafe for coffee and light snacks. However, the real standout here is Manhattan-import Scarpetta, which specializes in Italian classics prepared locally sourced ingredients and fresh-caught sea-foods. We suggest trying one of the pastas — they're handmade daily.

It was wonderful. We didn't want to leave the place! The Travelzoo deal was really just great. Thank you. They gave us the upgrade to a room with a balcony and also the late 2 pm checkout, which was awesome! We didn't take advantage of the valet parking, but used our $60 breakfast credit for breakfast in bed! It's a beautiful place and they have all kinds of fun stuff -- outdoor firepits, heated plastic igloos you can reserve for dinner or drinks, an outdoor skating rink, even musicians playing in the lounge. We had planned to go into town that night but were having so much fun we never left. We loved our room, too. The bed was comfy; the views spectacular. Enjoyed just hanging out in our room a lot too. Everything is lit up at night, including the bridge, so it's just beautiful.

When i reserved the room, I mentioned that it was a special occasion and asked if we could have a room with a nice view. Later that evening, there was a knock at our door and they delivered a bottle of Prosecco with two glasses and French macaroons and a nice note from the front office team. What a surprise! That really was a nice touch. This place is wonderful. Can't say enough about it. I want to go back!

Nice getaway Expensive breakfast— you’ll need the entire $60 credit and more ( with tip) Slow service in restaurant at breakfast but guessing they don’t have many walk- in patrons and keep a small morning staff. (The staff was pleasant and hard working, just too few.) Long wait for coffee. Food was obviously cooked to order and took some time— that was fine, just made the lack of coffee refills more frustrating. Excellent quality food. Spacious, immaculate dining room with a view of Narragansett Bay.

the grounds and lobby were nice. its like they are trying to be a better hotel. the staff in the breakfast room were kind.
Other Comments
Stains on wall, holes in sheets, frayed bathrobe. Exposed wires and lack of place to plug personal devices in on one side of bed (have pictures of all). The room was institutional and falling apart. the walls were so thin we heard people talking in the room on one side and the tv blasting all night from the other. there were also children screaming and running in the halls starting at 630am waking everyone up in their path because of the lack of sound proofing. the staff at the front desk was generally not helpful. Long line(25 minutes) for buffet breakfast where the eggs and bacon were cold. then when I went to check out they asked if email receipt was fine and I have yet to receive an email 24 hours later so now I will have to call them to inquire.
