Overview

A stay at the Colonial Houses is like stepping back in time. The hotel is made up of 26 homes from the 18th century within the living-history museum Colonial Williamsburg. Once used as kitchens, shops and brick houses, the converted buildings are decorated with period furnishings and include rooms with one or two beds, all with private bathrooms. Modern amenities like coffeemakers and televisions are included, and each room has space for a small seating area; many also have canopy beds and fireplaces.

As part of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the hotel offers exclusive perks to enhance a visit to the Revolutionary City. All reservations in the landmark lodgings include free shuttle service around town, on-site parking, Wi-Fi, two-hour bike rentals and use of the tennis courts. The property has three pools, two outdoor and one indoor, a spa and a fitness center with complimentary classes. Guests receive discounted tickets, retail purchases and evening programs. Tavern rooms are located off of Duke of Gloucester in the heart of Historical Colonial Williamsburg.

Dining options in Colonial Williamsburg include four historical tavern restaurants, all within walking distance. To taste a bit of the past, reserve a table at George Washington’s favorite tavern, sample colonial snacks at the apothecary, or pick up homemade cookies at the bakery. Picky eaters can fill up on familiar favorites like burgers, pizza and handcrafted cocktails with casual and upscale options.

We did not get to go due to Hurricane Florence. We did reschedule but not at the great Travelzoo rates.

My husband and I loved walking out of our room, out the door and stepping right onto DoG Street.

These rooms may not be the best fit for those traveling with very small children. Since the buildings are older, sounds tend to travel rather easily.

I loved the ambience and being close to everything!

Insufficient hot water, no lighting in the hallway making it impossible to find the door and keyhole, lawn care at 6:30 a.m.

Location on Duke of Gloucester Street made this an easy walk to anywhere in Colonial Williamsburg. Parking was also a plus, not easy to find convenient parking when there are a lot of visitors.

The location was perfect.

There was no internet (although the ad said that there was). To get it, you had to walk 2 blocks and sit in the inn. Also, the only way to hook up a hairdryer was on a strip near the TV. There was no mirror near there. The mirrors that were there didn't have an outlet near enough for you to use your hair dryer. Because of this, it made it almost impossible to style my hair. The only air conditioner vent was above the bed which had a canopy. No air could really get in the room so it was not cool enough to sleep. Evidently, there was a lot of dust because both of us became congested with sore throats.
