With a celebrity guest list, architect-designed cabins and a peaceful setting in Swedish Lapland near the Arctic Circle, the Tree Hotel is one of the World's Coolest Tree-House Hotels, according to Travel + Leisure. It was the brainchild of the Lindvall family, who were inspired by "The Tree Lover" documentary to create a place where guests can experience living in the forest. Former visitors include Kate Moss and the Swedish royal family.
The property is surrounded by 100-year-old pines next to the River Lule, five minutes' drive from the village of Harads. It is an hour's drive from Luleå, a laidback coastal town with "more than its fair share of top-notch restaurants" (Lonely Planet) and a regional airport.
Guests check in at Britta's Pensionat, a cosy guesthouse with 1930-50s décor, a 5-minute walk away. It has a bar and a restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch (23 June-31 July only) and dinner made from locally sourced ingredients. There's also a sauna (extra charge), a TV room and showers. The hotel can arrange seasonal activities in the surrounding area, such as guided hikes, white-water canoeing, snowmobile safaris and ice fishing, for an additional fee.
There are seven futuristic cabins -- each specifically designed for the site by a different architect. They are suspended above the ground and accessed by a ramp, a bridge or retractable stairs. The Bird's Nest emulates an enormous eyrie in the treetops, The UFO is a floating flying saucer, and The Mirrorcube's mirrored walls reflect its leafy surroundings -- it had to be coated in infrared film to prevent birds flying into it. There's also The Cabin, The Blue Cone, The Dragonfly and The 7th Room (new in January 2017). All have free Wi-Fi and ensuite toilets, although showers are in the main guesthouse.
