With high ceilings, oak panelling and chandeliers, Best Western Chilworth Manor Hotel is an "attractive" (The AA) converted Edwardian manor house in the Hampshire village of Chilworth. The New Forest and South Downs national parks, Southampton and Winchester are all within 20 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Southampton has something for everyone. For history enthusiasts, there is Bargate, the Old Town gateway, and the 14th-century town walls -- the longest stretch of unbroken medieval defensive walling in England. There is also a Jane Austen Trail through the Old Town, which starts at Bargate and takes in eight significant places related to the author. Westquay has plenty of high-street shopping and dining options, or you can check out Bedford Place for its independent shops and cafés.

The New Forest and South Downs national parks both offer picturesque woodlands, rolling hills, quaint villages and market towns.

Chilworth is a quiet village near Southampton. Part of it is a conservation area with lots of buildings dating back to the 16th century, including several thatched cottages.

The hotel is set in 12 acres of landscaped gardens with a walking trail. It has an indoor pool, a gym and a spa with a sauna and a steam room. There is also a restaurant and a lounge.

Rooms are in the main house or the adjacent extension. Deluxe rooms have Nespresso coffee machines and views of the gardens. Wi-Fi is free.

We were not able to go but when I phoned the hotel they did not mind that I wanted someone else to take our place. My friends had a wonderful time.

The dinner and breakfast!
Other Comments
The food was of exceptional standard and well-worthy of a 5 star Michelin award. We have stayed in B&Bs and a couple of the leading world hotels and we have put Chilworth Manor's dinner and breakfast top of our list with not a single item not of exceptional quality.

My main meal of chicken korma was nice.
Other Comments
Bed was uncomfortable. Bathroom had a shower curtain which is unhygenic. Curtains did not close properly. Food was average and very overpriced. And there was a smell of nappies in the corridor connecting the main area to the rooms.

Very comfortable superior room and excellent staff
Other Comments
We needed to stay in the area but did not realise we had stayed there a few years ago overnight. Mainly a corporate venue which for us made the lounge and bar area not that welcoming.
