Escape to Rothay Manor Hotel -- a "perfectly located" (The AA Hotel Guide 2017) Grade II-listed property 10 minutes' walk from Lake Windermere. Overnight stays are now £169, saving up to 35% on the usual cost, and include:

  • Accommodation in a Classic Double Room, with full Cumbrian breakfast, for two
  • Tea and scones for two (worth £15)
  • A 3-course gourmet dinner each (worth £45 per person)
  • Overnight stays with breakfast and tea and scones are £109
  • It's an extra £20 per night to stay in a Superior Room

Why We Love It

  • This Cumbrian hideaway is "perfectly located for touring the Lakes" (The AA Hotel Guide 2017), and is 10 minutes' walk from Lake Windermere
  • The hotel is set in the picturesque, fell-ringed town of Ambleside and boasts a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant
  • Grizedale Forest and John Ruskin's home of Brantwood are 20 minutes' drive away

Rothay Manor Hotel is a country-house retreat in Ambleside, a pretty Lakeland town just to the north of Lake Windermere. A quaint water mill, a 17th-century stone bridge and cosy, slate-roofed pubs are a few of the quirks you'll find in this fell-encircled town.

There is an abundance of things to do in the area. You can join a launch cruise from Waterhead (within a 15-minute walk of the hotel), while Lakeland Pony Treks is a 20-minute drive away near Troutbeck. You can also drive 20 minutes and hike trails lined with sculptures and ancient beech trees at Grizedale Forest, or explore the personal treasures of John Ruskin at his home Brantwood (open daily; Wed-Sun in winter).

The Grade II-listed hotel was built in 1823 and holds two AA Rosettes for its fine-dining cuisine. As well as traditional Sunday lunch and afternoon tea, the restaurant serves a variety of gourmet dishes created using locally sourced produce.

Bedrooms have Egyptian cotton sheets and feather-down bedding. Classic rooms are at the side or rear of the hotel with views over the River Rothay towards Loughrigg Fell, or over Ambleside towards Wansfell Pike. Front-facing Superior rooms have a balcony or terrace with garden views, and Suites offer more space.

Guests get free use of the swimming pool and gym at the Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa (subject to availability), which is a 10-minute walk away. Dogs can stay in some rooms for £20 per dog, per stay (please enquire on booking).

A short walk into Ambleside and a great location for the Langdales, Hawkshead and Coniston as well as Windemere&Bowness and Rydal, Thirlmere, Grasmere and Keswick with accessible car parking in a country house hotel Excellent and extensive breakfast with efficient and effective waiter service. Table linen and good quality cutlery, stylish food. Dining room overlooking garden. Walk in shower room and bedroom well presented - clearly we had a bedroom for clients with disabilities. Well serviced and with all amenities as listed Prosecco on arrival - well chilled and a large glass too.
Other Comments
This is a country house hotel and reception is low key - billing can be slow although we did not experience that ourselves. May have groups of people on courses - they can be loud!!

The breakfast was good and the staff and service was particularly good
Other Comments
Dinner was really poor We both chose the vegetarian option as our main course and it was a very small portion and tasteless We were unable to have afternoon tea because we had not pre-booked although there was nothing on the website to state that this was required and it wasn't that busy.

Friendly helpful staff.

The first room number 7 was noisy with the kitchen extractor. We could not stay in it so were moved to number 8/much better.
