The imposing façade of Queens Hotel Cheltenham - MGallery presides elegantly over Imperial Square and Gardens, and the Promenade, a beautifully preserved Regency-era thoroughfare lined by elm and horse-chestnut trees. Since opening July, 1838, the hotel has welcomed illustrious guests including Charles Napier, Arthur Conan Doyle and Edward Elgar.

Behind its Corinthian columns, large windows and carved cornices, a sense of space prevails. Its impressive lobby has a striking tiled floor, sumptuous armchairs and hand-painted wallpaper designed by Augustus Pugin -- the same design can be found in the Houses of Parliament. Other original features at this Grade II-listed property include a towering staircase and a curved wooden bar brought back from India in 1850.

The Napier Restaurant and Orangery uses fresh ingredients from local Cotswolds farms and artisan producers. In fine weather, meals can be taken in the garden. The Gold Cup Bar offers over 40 varieties of gin in an ornate but intimate setting, including one that was created by a local distillery to commemorate the hotel's 180th anniversary.

Bedrooms are spread over three floors and offer climate control, crisp Egyptian cotton linen, fluffy bathrobes and walk-in showers in the bathrooms.

This was our 2nd time at the Queens hotel, both times booked through Travelzoo and both times we've had a great stay. Although the rooms do seem to vary in size (so be warned), if you're lucky to get the larger rooms they are super comfortable and the in-house cookies they bake (at reception from 5pm) are delicious! The hotel bar was surprisingly busy too which adds to a nice atmosphere in the evenings. At reception, Alberto was exceptionally sweet and helpful, but all staff are generally very nice and professional. Always have a good stay here, would recommend it.

Lovely stay but noise from outside on a Saturday night was boisterous until the early hours. Must ask for a quiet room next time

Excellent experience, highly professional yet friendly service, grand building, great bed, perfect breakfast. Only problem is that I sometimes have trouble booking online on Travelzoo site (comes up with my server is denied access) so my husband had to book for me.

Fantastic hotel, we had a superior room as part of the Travelzoo deal which was beautiful. We had a view over the town and all the Christmas lights. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, and the plate of petit fours in our room was a nice touch. The breakfast was delicious, and my gluten free diet was well catered for. The location was perfect, just a few minutes walk down to the town and shops. Just opposite the hotel are several very nice bars and restaurants.

Will definitely return in the summer, and would recommend the hotel to anyone.

We had a lovely first visit to Cheltenham, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Only downside was some strange beeping that went off every minute or so from about 6 in the morning which woke us and kept us awake..
