Overview
With canoes in the ceilings, lamps that look like Winnebago campers and bright plaid carpets and furniture in the lobby, Madison's new Graduate Hotel evokes both a scholastic feel and outdoorsy vibe. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called this "rustic-modern" property a "collegiate wonderland for grown-ups."
Rooms range from a cozy Graduate Double with one full bed (perhaps best for solo travelers), all the way up to the Camp Wandawega Suite, made to resemble a camp cabin that features a king bed for mom and dad and bunk beds for the kids. Most guests will find the rooms with one king, queen or two queen beds a fine fit -- all have complimentary Wi-Fi, bright and modern bathrooms, a minifridge and coffeemaker, and some even have views of Lake Mendota.
There are two dining options on site -- the Portage Pi cafe in the lobby features coffee, juice, breakfast sandwiches, salads and signature hand pies with fillings like banana s'mores, short ribs, or cheese curds. Atop the hotel is the Madison Blind, the seventh-floor rooftop bar with a full kitchen, cocktails and beers from local breweries like Karben4 and Ale Asylum along with panoramic views of the city and lake.
When you step off the hotel's grounds (or ride away on one of its rental bikes), you're right in the midst of the U of W world, steps away from the arboretum, Chazen Museum of Art, the Overture Center for the Arts and all the shops, restaurants and bars of State Street.
- "There is an outdoors-loving style, a Midwestern down-to-earthness and a dose of modernism that gives the place an astuteness that's hard to beat" -- Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
