Why We Love It

Set in 45 acres of tranquil parkland and woodland, Friars Carse is a country estate within the grounds of what was originally a 13th-century friary. The poet Robert Burns spent much of his short but eventful life in the vicinity of Friars Carse -- even engraving lines with his diamond-point pen on the summer-house windows. The stencil is now on display at Ellisland Farm Museum, which is just a short walk away.

The hotel is on the banks of the River Nith, and offers seasonal angling opportunities exclusively for hotel guests (supplements apply). There is also tackle storage, a drying room and freezing facilities on site.

From the hotel, Sandyhills Beach is a 40 minutes' drive from the hotel, while Sweetheart Abbey is 20 minutes away. Dundrennan Abbey, where Mary, Queen of Scots spent her final night in Scotland, and the moated triangular Caerlaverock Castle are both within a 50-minute drive.

The Whistle Restaurant uses seasonal produce and also offers an extensive wine list. It was here that a famous drinking competition between Burns and Fergusson of Craigdarroch took place -- to win the right to be put into verse by Burns.

Rooms have free Wi-Fi, and many have views across the well-maintained lawns.

The accommodation location and scenery are fantastic. Close to lots of activities and days out options. Friendly staff and comfortable accommodation.

The food at dinner would benefit from a bit more care in terms of ingredients and care of presentation. Frozen chips and what seemed to be 'smash' potato with an excellent steak and kidney pudding took the edge off what could have been a great meal. Also the atmosphere in the dining room would benefit from looking at as its all very quiet and you feel like you have to talk in whispers. It was not a warm and inviting experience which lead us to eat out for 2 of our 3 night stay.

It's a bit out of the way, but that helps with the feeling of peace and tranquility.
