Needham House Hotel is an Edwardian manor in Little Wymondley, a quiet village near the market town of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. The property re-opened in 2016, following a 3-year renovation, and now has bright boutique-style interiors.

The hotel is easily reached from central London -- the train journey from King's Cross to Stevenage takes around 25 minutes, and it is then 10 minutes by taxi to the hotel. The 120-acre Fairlands Valley Park is a 10-minute drive from the hotel (open daily; the sailing centre is open Tuesday-Saturday). The property is less than 40 minutes' drive from the city of St Albans, with its "host of crooked Tudor buildings" and "elegant Georgian town houses" (Lonely Planet), and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, where you can see behind the scenes of the "Harry Potter" movies.

The hotel's SG4 Brasserie holds two AA Rosettes for its British dishes, served in a relaxed setting. Hertfordshire Life reviewed the restaurant and praised its "attentive" service and "good solid fare". The adjoining bar and lounge offers a selection of over 30 different gins. There's also an ESPA spa with a Turkish hammam, a Swedish sauna and treatment rooms.

Bedrooms are modern and have views of the hotel's grounds. Executive Rooms have larger beds and a bigger TV than the Classic Rooms. Wi-Fi is free.

Food was not up to scratch. We had a turkey dinner but it was turkey roll, a bit like school dinners. However, this may be cost cutting because of the deal we had. It was very good value, but next time I would expect better cuisine.

The lighting in the bedrooms, whilst appreciating it has been styled towards an ambient atmosphere, the lighting level is very dim to the point of depressive dullness.

Fantastic hotel, great location, beautiful views. Friendly staff, gorgeous decor, nicely laid out. Our room was stunning, spotless, spacious, lovely bathroom, fabulous toiletries, comfy bed. We had dinner and breakfast and both were extremely high quality. The bar had an extensive selection of options, including a 40 item gin menu. We had a relaxed drink in the comfortable stylish lounge before our meal. Can't wait to go back. It's the perfect place to relax. Looking forward to trying out the spa next time as well!

I'm a vegetarian and we had a set menu as part of our stay. The veggie option was a salad, which was nice, but not a great dinner option when the others were fish, chicken and a burger. There needs to be a proper hot option for people who don't eat fit and meat, especially at this time of year! While the drinks from the bar were reasonably priced, the wine was very very expensive. We'll definitely go back but while the quality of the food was good, the options weren't impressive.

Food generally very good, but I thought the filleted beef rib was very small, the mashed potato was very runny and the two thin slivers of leek were unacceptable as a portion of vegetable. The other meals were fine, which is why we didn't comment at the time. Strange strong smell in the room was unpleasant, but we decided it was some sort of cleaning product.
