A Victorian former railway hotel, Hallmark Hotel The Queen, Chester is filled with quirky features that reference its heritage -- look out for the reception desk made out of antique suitcases and bar menus resembling train tickets. There is also a chandelier in the lobby that includes the names of past queens.

The hotel is opposite Chester railway station and 10 minutes' walk from the city centre. Lonely Planet describes Chester as "one of English history's greatest gifts" because of its medieval architecture and collection of Tudor- and Victorian-era buildings, all enclosed within red standstone walls that date from the Roman era. Walking the walls is a great way to get to know the city.

Chester Cathedral was founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092. We recommend taking a tour of the bell tower for panoramic views of the city from 125 feet above the ground.

Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse still in use in England, is a 20-minute stroll away. Chester Zoo, with over 15,000 animals from 500 different species including Asian elephants, jaguars and orangutans, is 10 minutes' drive away.

One of the hotel's restaurants -- The King's Grill -- holds an AA Rosette and serves locally sourced food. Breakfast is served in the Jubilee Restaurant, and snacks are available in the Waiting Room Bar.

The hotel also has secluded Roman-themed gardens, three bars, a fitness suite and free Wi-Fi.

Only let down by lack of dress code in the restaurant. Pyjamas worn during breakfast shouldn’t be allowed & spoilt the ambience & quality/standard of an otherwise exceptional hotel

The history of the hotel, old paintings and info. Also the quirky bits eg old suitcases for registration desk, bedroom furniture made to look like travel trunks!
Other Comments
We did NOT like the music in the King's grill! Both at evening meal and again at breakfast it was quite loud jazz..... not soothing and not to everyone's taste. Staff/menu could have been clearer about what veg came with the Mains on the menu.

Other Comments
Only downside is having to pay a high fee for parking which we chose not to. Parking should be free for residents.
