Why We Love It

  • The heritage of this Victorian railway hotel is celebrated throughout -- look out for the reception desk made of antique suitcases and the bar menus resembling train tickets
  • The King's Grill holds an AA Rosette
  • Previous guests include Charles Dickens, Cecil Rhodes and Lillie Langtry
  • Chester Cathedral is a 10-minute stroll away, and Chester Racecourse is 20 minutes' walk away
  • Chester Zoo, which has more than 15,000 animals, is 10 minutes' drive away

A Victorian former railway hotel, Hallmark Hotel The Queen, Chester is filled with quirky features that reference its heritage -- look out for the reception desk made out of antique suitcases and bar menus resembling train tickets. There is also a chandelier in the lobby that includes the names of past queens.

The hotel is opposite Chester railway station and 10 minutes' walk from the city centre. Lonely Planet describes Chester as "one of English history's greatest gifts" because of its medieval architecture and collection of Tudor- and Victorian-era buildings, all enclosed within red standstone walls that date from the Roman era. Walking the walls is a great way to get to know the city.

Chester Cathedral was founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092. We recommend taking a tour of the bell tower for panoramic views of the city from 125 feet above the ground.

Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse still in use in England, is a 20-minute stroll away. Chester Zoo, with over 15,000 animals from 500 different species including Asian elephants, jaguars and orangutans, is 10 minutes' drive away.

One of the hotel's restaurants -- The King's Grill -- holds an AA Rosette and serves locally sourced food. Breakfast is served in the Jubilee Restaurant, and snacks are available in the Waiting Room Bar.

The hotel also has secluded Roman-themed gardens, three bars, a fitness suite and free Wi-Fi.

The pleasant staff and beautiful interior decor.

All good other than a couple of niggles - as a group of friends we would have preferred double beds that could separate into singles in the family rooms; the restaurant evening menu was limited and a bit pricey in my opinion and the wi-fi did not automatically re-connect when returning to the hotel. Staff were pleasant and always helpful. Convenient location. Would definitely stay again.

A Victorian building showing signs of need for refurbishment in some areas. Small very slow lift. Comfortable but unexciting rooms. Large busy breakfast room with good selection of quality buffet items. Helpful reception staff.

waiting to book in the couple in front were given lots of info re the lay out of the hotel, what times meals were ,where to eat, how to get to Chester centre etc, we got nothing! Upon booking in all we got was this is your room number and its down this corridor. We went shopping and returned to the hotel and decided to eat in the restaurant, when we entered we were told we SHOULD have booked and that they would try and fit us in! We were seated eventually, but at the end of the meal I was told we had to pay as no "tab" had been set up, not a very nice ending to the evening. I queried the drink, early/late check in and upgrade (of which there was plenty available) to be told it wasn't on the system so it couldn't be done! I am upset that this was all paid for six months ago and we did not get the service that we had paid for.
