Why We Love It

  • The 18th-century hotel is at the foot of the Pentland Hills -- ideal for ramblers
  • It's 20 minutes' drive from Edinburgh, where you can visit Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat
  • The property has 1000 acres of grounds, as well as tennis courts and an indoor pool

Tucked away at the foot of the Pentland Hills, around 20 minutes' drive from central Edinburgh, Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club is an ideal middle ground between the country and city.

Scotland's capital is full of impressive sights. Edinburgh Castle dates from the 12th century and houses the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny. To see new architecture meeting old, head to Holyrood, where the contemporary Scottish Parliament Building and 16th-century Holyrood Palace (the home of the Queen in Scotland) sit opposite each other. Holyrood Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also where you'll find Arthur's Seat -- the remains of a 350-million-year-old extinct volcano.

There are two restaurants -- Pentland and The Brasserie -- both with views of the grounds. The Pentland serves locally sourced Scottish fare, including herbs from its own garden, while the more informal Brasserie serves grilled meats and pasta dishes.

The hotel is popular with golfers, facilities include a driving range and two 18-hole courses. There are also tennis courts, an indoor heated pool, a gym and a sauna.

All rooms have queen-size beds and views of the golf course or grounds. They also have Sky Sports, Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Room was nicely decorated and spacious
Other Comments
Food, small menu which often can reflect beautifully executed food, supplements on most dishes, which were not cheap. Supplement on Cod( and all other mains with the exception of pork and risotto. Additional charge for service in Pentland restaurant, for being served, surely that is what a customer expects: service in the dining room. Brasserie lacked atmosphere as did James Braid Bar. Most rooms located in modern extension which is not what pictures reflect.

We had rather a long wait for the main course of our meal, but we were offered a free drink as an apology.

If you take the bus to Edinburgh remember to take change as the hotel didn't tell us that buses no longer give change.

Breakfasts were very good and the food and service in the bistro were much better than the main restaurant.
Other Comments
The bathroom toilet roll holder was not fixed security the wall and the flush was not effective. The bed was not very comfortable. The most disappointing thing was the evening meal in the Pentland Restaurant. The steak was inedible and the food generally was uninspiring. Poor service too.
